I was five miles out on a 90 degree intercept to the final, visual approach and was asked to square the base to final, which ive done a thousands times before, but i couldn't get any more square than 90 degrees. What exactly do the tower controllers want with that request? Or Was he just unaware of my actual position?

Once you're cleared for the visual you can turn directly to the numbers. My best guess, given the situation you provided, is the controller wanted you to continue doing what you were doing (flying the square base) and not immediately point your nose at the numbers.

Tower was letting you know that traffic may cause a conflict, and was giving you the option to "make space".

I agree with you that it is most likely to provide traffic spacing. However, at this point it not optional anymore. The towers is TELLING you to square the base.

The reason the tower said it in the first place is because you were cleared for the visual from the position you were (5 miles) and they wanted to make sure you don't decide to drive straight to the runway as mentioned by TripSix

He was just unaware of what you might do next. A lot of pilots don't do square base legs.

:yeahthat: I almost always dog-leg base to final, especially at our home base with closely spaced parallel runways.

Was your heading perpendicular to the runway, or your ground track? Remember, his radar shows your ground track.
