I raise the flaps BEFORE I go around. Then I point the nose at flocks of Geese.

    CHOMP!

There is this old pilot (has close to 60,000 hours) at our airport who flies a super cub. He takes biologists to count animals in Yellowstone. He was coming in one day and the airport was less then a mile vis. He asked the tower for a special VFR and they would not give it to him. He then asked them if they could see the runway from the tower. They said no. radio silence...

I can't believe this guy is still alive.

I remember he gave a talk to our class one year and this kid asked how to do a turn in the tight canyons. This old timer said "It's easy, Just pull back on the stick and give it lots of rudder to bring the nose around"

We had a pilot at Martinaire get in trouble because she not only took off VFR while it was IFR but then she gave Center a bases and tops report when she called to get her clearance.

Last week I was VFR flight following on a cloudy day. BKN around 4000, we were flying at well below the clouds @ 2500 good vis. when center asked an IFR aircraft if they had us in sight (they were descending through the layer)..the IFR pilot gets on and says, "it's awful cloudy down there", and "there's no way that guy is in legal VFR"...nice...we were completely legal, but this set off a brief Q&A from the controller.. but yeah. I can see if someone is departing into IMC but some of these wanna be white knights who think they can interpret cockpit visibility while going through the clouds you are legally staying below are nuts, and then feel the need to blast you on the radio..

Well that's a candyass thing to do on his part. Reminds me of one of my co-workers who called me out in front of the owner the other day, but that's for another thread...

We had a crew at Horizon get into some trouble for busting VFR cloud clearance requirements with a Fed on the Jumpseat. Accepted a visual approach into PDX and proceeded to skirt just under the clouds (close enough that the Fed even asked them how far did they think they were below the clouds).

Well, I guess unless they flew up into the clouds, noted the altimeter, and descended, there isn't any way to be certain, is there?

But the Fed in the jumpseater in this case was an idiot. For had he ever read AIM 5-4-22(a), he would know that:

Same check airman that I had been flying with was saying they had a check airman meeting and it was brought up. Nothing came of it, that I know, probably just some Fed thinking he "got a crew". I've heard stories about a few SEA FSDO guys being airline washouts that make it there business to try and bust people, as sad as that sounds.

The only Fed's I ever had in the jumpseat were from the Helena FSDO going from SEA to HLN, and those guys were a pleasure to have on the jumpseat.

The only Fed I know well at all is a hell of a nice guy. Ex-airline, but just got tired of bankruptcy and furloughs.

Most of the one's I've encountered have been great guys, but there have been a few that were just jackwagon's. Our POI for Wings Air tried to bust me on my ATP/135 Ride because I couldn't get the Navajo's engine to restart in the air (after the emergency shutdown). He wouldn't let me use the Autopilot and I don't have 3 hands to fly, reach above my head to hit the starter and move the mixture.

I threw out the whole PTS standard to him and he backed off, but with some of those guys you've got to watch out.
