I probably wouldn't even bitch at them, not like it would change what they would do anyway...

Now the Fork Tailed Doctor Killer that zipped past me about 50' above at 7,000 - I know you never saw me, would love to have torn you a new one. Cruising around at an IFR altitude not talking to anyone - it would be nice if your transponder wasn't off by 2,000'....

Second best idea in this thread, behind only my earlier post of course.

I think it all depends upon whether or not he was running oversquare...

I have been told by a few VFR pilots that I could not have been VFR while they were sitting on the ground... flight viability is only known from the cockpit and 1 mile clear of clouds is easy to do.

Recently discovered picture of you both...

Oh, you mean you've seen that guy too? *reaches for torch and pitchfork* I agree. That is a lot more frightening, and it makes that person not a dummy but someone deliberately reckless.

I had a Cirrus come busting out at me in the LA Class B once...IFR altitude, not talking to anyone, well within the lateral confines, close enough to read the tail number. A few seconds after the traffic call, the guy called up to Approach. Needless to say phone numbers were exchanged...

Kind of like pedestrians/onlookers in a neighborhood who always think loud cars are speeding, even though they are going under the limit.....perception...

Well there are some places where it would be impossible to have a clearance or radar service, etc in Golf airspace. My understanding is that your clearance isn't even a clearance until you enter controlled airspace. I can see getting caught with your pants down on the 700' to Echo stuff.... but some places in the Western US it may be more usual.

I agree. Doing it with a bunch of witnesses is also inadvisable, plus punching in "VFR" anyway when you've been denied an IFR clearance in front of those witnesses. The worst I had was taking off from the old Panama City airport early one low IFR morning before tower opened. Probably 1/2 mile with fog. As we taxied onto the runway after getting our clearance from center we heard a Lear announce that he was taking off oposite direction. FO and I looked at each other with the "Did we just hear that right?" look. Before I could key the mike the Lear flew over us in the opposite direction and checked in with center "VFR off of Panama City looking for IFR clearance."

You know, this response comes up every time this topic comes up. And yeah, maybe we SHOULD give eachother the benefit of the doubt. But something (maybe it's the crowd of pilots I was around at my last job? Or maybe it's the accident reports I've read?) causes me to believe that it's pretty likely that a lot of these people ARE legitimately idiots who blast through the clouds sans IFR clearance with little to no regard for who else might be out there. I'm just not a particularly charitable soul when it comes to believing peoples' excuses for a third party pilot who is accused of actin' a fool.

My major concern about people doing this is that I don't subscribe to the "big sky little bullet" philosophy. Eventually one of these guys will hit an airliner with pax. Yeah, the airliners have TCAS, but it only works if the other airplane has a transponder. If/when this happens you can bet the turd will roll down hill and will land square on the lap of all GA operators in the form of greater restrictions and regulations. Kind of like Aeromexico 498.

The ground crews running the runway & braking action numbers at the local Class E airport love this, I hear stories at least once a week through the Winter. I tell them the radio calls on the CTAF when entering the runway will protect them.
