At the risk of flying A.netty, I was thinking back on my recent trip which included a 20 minute ride on a US Airways A319 PHX-TUS. Got me thinking about how many commercial flights there are under a half hour in length. I'm sure many of you have flown really short repos, I see flights between SFO/OAK/SJC regularly on flightaware. And I'm sure the part 91 and 135 guys are doing this kind of stuff almost regularly. Must be a lot of work going thru all those checklists in 10 minutes. What are some of the one's that come to mind for you guys?

Flights I've taken under 20 minutes:
    OGG-HNL 16 minutes
    SBA-LAX/MRY-SFO 17 minutes
    HNL-LIH 18 minutes
    SJC-SMF/SFO-MRY 19 minutes

Flying myself, the shortest flights I've done were MCE-MER and PAO-SQL, right around 5 minutes takeoff to landing.

    KMYF-KSEE or KSDM-KMYF.
While not a commercial flight I do both of these on a regular basis. I have to round up the hobbs meter to log the .1 on these legs. It makes the 15 minute legs I did in freight look feel like a long x-country.

Shortest flight I did in the Lear 60 was ADS-DAL. It was a quick 7 minute flight, and we never even brought the gear up.

We used to do lots of short flights on the ATR & EMB out of ORD.

    ORD-SBN
    ORD-RFD
    ORD-MKE
    ORD-MSN

Each was about 15-20 minutes in the air. MSN maybe a bit longer, 20-25 maybe.

I've done ATL/MCN in an RJ in 8 minutes, and Delta used to fly a 757 from MIA to FLL. They would take off, turn base for FLL and land.

Thats only 26 miles by car. Why in the world would a person want all that hassle. Get a cab!

I do AGC-LBE at least once a week it seems. That usually ends up being about 8-10 minutes.

The flight was sold as ATL-MIA-FLL. It was the last flight of the day, and repo'd the plane to FLL for a morning departure. However, there were thru passengers on it, and they would pick up some in MIA.

Connecting. Figure its a 30 minute drive, you'd have to rent a car or take a cab if you don't have someone to drive you. Let's say you're flying SFO-MIA-FLL with a 45 minute connection in MIA followed by 25 minutes on the airplane gate to gate on the way to FLL, and it costs the same as SFO-MIA, or even a little cheaper. Alternative is get off your 5 hour flight, navigate this huge airport and get to the rental car place, wait in line, grab the car, drive to FLL. It's going to take almost as long and it's WAY more hassle. I'm all for letting someone else do all the work while I sit on my ass and get the same end result, its practically my motto in life.

And a 26 mile cab ride in traffic is going to suck way more financially than another hour and ten minutes in airports/airplanes.

I guarantee it was rare for anyone but non-revs to only do MIA-FLL with no connection.

Ah the connecting flight! I was for some reason not even factoring that in to the equation.

It's funny how most of us don't make that connection(no pun intended). Before I worked at Skywest, I thought it was silly that they flew to SMF, MOD, MRY from SFO when all are within a 2 hour drive. On top of that, non-stop tickets are around $300 roundtrip! Once I got the job, I realized that such flights exist virtually entirely for connections. Prices are high because they want to discourage locals from taking a seat away from a connecting passenger who may end up paying much more for it. Plus I hear they make money hand over fist since the operating cost is so low on such a short flight.

Funny story. Sometimes when I would refund segments off canceled flights, the short connecting flight would worth hundreds more than the trans-con the person was about to take. Often flights to, say, SMF would cancel due to ground delays. The person would be shocked to see they paid $438 for JFK-SFO-SMF, but got $302 back for the SFO-SMF segment. It wasn't all too common, but I wouldn't call it rare.
