I was waiting to see what happened to the "real" plane... only need to watch -0:35-0:40 everything else is worthless

Sounds like the guy with the hand-held says the Pitts made it down OK.

According to the comments the incident happened at Brighton Van-Aire Estates Airport (CO12) in Colorado.

I don't know if there's enough information to assume that the RC guy was the one at fault. For all we know, the runway could have been closed by notam for their event. Would like to know the details, though.

I didnt blame the RC operator, im just a little miffed at his attitude. Being more concerned about your toy than a real person is bad form, at best.

If it is, that's a private use field. If the aircraft involved didn't have permission to fly over, wouldn't he be responsible for breaking the 500-foot rule?

So, if I understand the rest of the video, the biplane was coming in to land (with smoke?), but went around when he saw the yokels standing out on the runway.

Oh, and OM NOM! NOM! NOM!

Sorry, I edited and reworded to come off as less of a butt head. I imagine had the Spitts taken a nose dive he probably would have been more concerned - but he probably had a lot of money invested in that thing.

I do think I caught him saying "I could have killed somebody!" at some point during the whole thing. Could be wrong though.

I'm sure the guy with the pitts had a lot of money invested into his plane also. To be clear, i dont have a problem with RC planes, I have a problem with dudes in affliction T-shirts getting bent out of shape over a toy when there are bigger things at risk.

Also, looking at the video, i think its pretty clear it was a fly in or some kind of airshow. I would venture a guess and say that the pitts was scheduled to do a fly by, and somewhere something got lost in translation.

At the very end of the video you can see another tail dragger of some kind taxiing down the runway with a whole bunch of spectators still walking on the runway. Not a very well organized event.

The was a real aircraft taxiing on the runway at the end of the video. A valid point however due to that I doubt it was closed.

This looks like somebody getting killed waiting to happen. The airplane hitting the RC plane is a serious problem, but even after the incident there were people all over the runway. I guess the RC guy hovering their toy airplanes do not realize the dangers of being around full size aircraft like that.

A plane lands at the end so it doesnt look like the runway was closed.

This seems a perfect example of perception and lack of knowledge on the part of the RC operator. When I was working in airport operations and doing a perimeter check I noticed an RC airplane very close to the final approach to one of our runways. I also knew that in the vicinity of the RC was the A & P department for a local community college. Sooooo after consulting with my supervisor I went over and asked the A&P students who were flying the aircraft to stop due to the airspace directly above them and the potential risks. Why they thought it was safe to fly an RC plane within the downwind, base, final quadrant is beyond me.

Maybe the guy in the pitts was trying to clear the runway for a landing. Kinda like a low flyby someone would do to try and get animals off the runway. The smoke was probably for fun maybe?

The RC guy seemed pretty distraught to me. Didnt seem concerned about his toy, at all.
