    Hey guys,

Just got a job as a cfi and I need to buy some pilot shirts and a pair of epaulets. I was just wondering which is the best (and cheapest) website to buy these from?

Best and cheapest are not usually found at the same place.

Leave the poor guy alone, at DCA back in the day, instructors had to wear the full monkey suit...imagine flying in a 152/172/Arrow or Seminole in the mid-summer FL heat with no A/C

Yeeeaaahhh, Go ahead and tell flight school owners that. Not a single monkey suit wearing CFI I've met, including myself, wants to wear it. But I'm not about to get paid half as much and drive twice as far to work for a place that let's me dress in a polo.

P.S. I wear the Aero Phoenix shirts, not the cheapest but good fit... Van Heusen is the go to for cheap, any of your major online pilot shops should have them.

I second what Chris said. A Cut Above has some of the best shirts. It just seems like they're never in stock though....

You know, most of us epaulette-wearing CFI's don't wear them because we need epaulettes to feel adequate in this world, we do it because the people giving us a paycheck have made it a prerequisite to earning the paycheck. Just sayin.

To answer the OP's question, mypilotstore.com has VanHeusen Aviators for very reasonable prices, but I'm not sure about the epaulettes because the school I work for has their own.

I found I liked the ones from Pilot House, their in-house ones. They are a little more expensive, roughly $27/pop. I own 6 of them and they last a good two years of working 5-6 leg days.

The Van Huesens are good because they don't wrinkle at all, so there is a plus, but they are kind of large and saggy.

One big tip - always when washing your shirts, use one of the those little soap rollers to roll a solution of detergent and water on the collars of your shirts before putting them in the wash, and only wash your shirts together at the same time, with no other clothes. If you can afford it I would get 5 shirts and just wear one a day and wash at the end of the week all together, although I know that is a large amount of $$ for a CFI. Roughly $100-$125.

Good luck on your new job!
