*Update* Everyone is ok. Just seems like a freak incident that beats the odds. Read below for news links. Wheel falls off of a A&M 152 and free falls onto a Cirrus. That's the current story. Really? Can't wait for the AOPA Pilot Story on this.

Heard from my controller friend there was a midair at College Station, TX this morning. Don't know anything more than that. I'm based out of Hooks(KDWH), as I find out more I will update. Fly safe guys.

Spoke to our maintenance this morning on how it could happen. Pulled up the 152 schematics. Even if the castle nut lost its safety pin, and wiggles off, you still have two bolts holding the caliper, which holds the disc brake. Only thing they could come up with is the single bolt which holds the strut came loose, and the "bonding" of the strut broke free and the entire assembly tumbled out. This is provided that the aluminum brake line snaps off as well. A lot of what if's. I feel bad for the last mechanic to touch the plane. They are not going to have a fun weekend.

I am glad everyone is ok. Had all of us down at Hooks all worried. Off to do the BC 16 at CLL and VOR at Brenham and grab a shake for lunch. Yum.

    CJ.

What are the chances that a wheel fell off and hit another airplane 1.000ft apart. Glad they are okay.

Having lived there for awhile, I can tell you that any local news source is basically useless.

    From the link above:
"Sources tell News 3 that the two planes were in the air, less than 1,000 feet apart, heading in opposite directions."

"The wheel from one plane fell and hit the front window of the other."

The reportring … it's like hearing a little kid tell the plot of the dream they had last night.

Strange... I see a cirrus without a chute pulled. Did it have a pilot on board?

Sometimes. There are several that have pulled the chute and are flying again. Seems to depend on what you land on.

WOW. I'm glad they all survived. Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

    Damn! Nice shot!

I'd love to be able to sit around a hangar while everyone is BS'ing and say, "well let me tell you about the time I shot down a Cirrus with a 152..."

They should put a cirrus sticker on the 152

And I always thought the "undercarriage" part of the prelanding check in a 152 was a joke...
