Metropolitan State University Denver,CO

Anyone here attend Metro for their aviation studies? I just applied (figured why have 2 degrees when you can have 3) for their Aerospace Sciences program and was wondering if anyone had any experience with it.

Maybe I'm nuts, but the words "Metropolitan State" are kind of vague and contradictory in some contexts. Strange name for an institute of higher learning.

If it makes you feel better I believe they are changing the name sometime soon.

This was years ago but it was a quality program. A large sim program that was supported by United. Great aviation collection in their library. And they did flight training at your choice of three or four large FBO's in the area which kept the flying costs down compared to a UND or Riddle. Wish I had gone there instead of Riddle.

I knew a friend who went to that school but actually started to learn to fly before starting college there. Passed the program and pretty much racked up flying time at $65/70 an hour in a C172 then later on $140/hr Seminole. Instructors cost was $25 to 35/hr. So a hell lot cheaper than UND and Riddle for sure. But then again that was in 2003..... When avagas was 2.80/gal at APA and cheaper at other Denver area airports

I graduated from there with an aviation degree. It is definitely a funny name for an accredited institute of higher learning. It's like any other "state" school; affordable and under funded, but there are some great teachers.

The aviation program had some great teachers when I was there, Don't know how much it's changed. If I did it again I'd minor in something aviation and get a more useful degree, but I liked it.

If you already have a couple of degrees under your belt, why not go for a masters?

How long ago did you graduate from there and you didnt happent to go to Golden High did you? The reason I ask is a good friend of mine had a friend named Matt that went there a while ago. I already did the Masters thing and couldnt stand it.

Graduated in '05 and no. I am originally from St. Louis and was halfway through an engineering degree when I decided I wanted to fly.

If you're looking for the college experience you definitely won't get it at Metro. It's largely a commuter campus and doesn't have the fun college atmosphere most other Universities do. That said it's an awesome campus in the middle of Denver!

I would suggest calling the department or admissions or something and getting in there for a tour. Talk to the teachers and students to get a feel for the general mood there. I know with funding cuts they were hurting a couple years ago.

I did 7 years of the university life and am old (well im only 30 but....) and married now. Been there done that. Iv'e already applied and made contact with the department head, just waiting to hear back from him to set up a meeting. I was thinking of UND but I own a home in Lakewood, Metro is far cheaper, they will give me at least 90 credits for my previous college experience, and once they get this new LiteRail line up and running I am within walking distance to a station. Glad to hear they have some good faculty and people had a good experience there.
Truly the only reason I am attending is due to the fact that I need to finance my flight training beyond my PPL and Instrument. I can get another degree, federal student loans, and still spend less than ATP, FlightSafety, etc.

Well you, my friend, are the perfect candidate for Metro! You'll enjoy it. And it is far cheaper than UND or Riddle.

Sounds like you've got it figured out. I wish I could justify talking you out of financing flight training, but I wouldn't have been able to do it otherwise. Plus I hear interest rates are low these days. Do you already have your instrument? Find a cheap flight school to do your training. Let me know if you need an instructor!

Working on my PPL now and will begin my Instrument right away. As long as my father owns his plane and my buddy who is a CFI doesn't get snatched up by an airline, my training is covered and man is it cheap. As of right now my PPL should be around $3500. The plane is for sale though so we will see what happens. He is working on his Instrument and the plane isn't IFR equiped and therefore wants to move into a plane that is. The rub is he wants partners and there could be an issue with me flying it.

Metro will give you credit for ratings already done, so if it's feasible to get the PPL done prior to enrolling at Metro you can get another 6 credits or something and you won't have to sit through "Piloting 101."

I graduated from metro. Was a really good program when I was there, significantly less expensive than the other aviation programs.

Oh, and did anyone do the flight team thing and if so how was it?

Some people seemed to enjoy flight team. Arguing about how many rivets hold the tail of a 152 together, which seemed to be a favorite activity of the team members, wasn't for me.

236 if you include the 4 pop-rivets(whole other argument altogether). Duh..........
Um, yeah doesnt sound like something I would be into.

I'll be attending Metro starting this upcoming semester (Fall 2011). Personally, I like the smaller school vibe, more comfortable for me than a larger university. I've heard good things about the school/program. I'll agree that it's a commuter school (I'll be commuting from Boulder). Let's hope everything goes well!

Metropolitan State University is in Minnesota! Which is one and only instituition name with Metropolitan State University (established in 1971)!

There is NO such Metropolitan State University in Denver!

HOWEVER, there is Metropolitan State College of Denver (established in 1965)!
