I'm fashion impaired, so I never opine on those issues.

I do like the sweater for practical reasons though.

This. There is no doubt when a Delta pilot walks through a terminal. Their uniforms demand respect.

When it's 40-65 out, a sweater works great. Sometimes enroute if the heat is lower you just need a little something extra. I think it's perfect for the role it could perform. I would prefer to be able to wear a sweater without epaulets, but that's a different story.

I'm a wearer of the sweater.
I also don't care what the internet commandos think, more in what the hot college chicks, and of course the cougars think.

Only grief I've gotten about the sweater has been from other pilots, mainly because QX pilots have nothing better to do...though they could use that free time to iron their own uniforms (Don't get me started). I'm getting around a 70-80% approval from the FA's.

I learned to hate our current sweater while asking for a JS on DL, CSA asked "Are you looking for the FA jump"...

I guess I really don't care, but sweaters are not for me.

Are they less "manly", eh, maybe. They make you look intellectual though. I always thought it was "unique" when flight instructors wore them with the epaulets...

I hate flying with guys who wear them because then they keep the flight deck cold.

I actually bought a non-epaulette sweater. I wanted one for non-pilot use as well, so that's what I wear. There are times when it's too cold with just the blazer and the white shirt, and sitting in the flight deck with the door still gets cold. Plus when I go in the airline club, I can just take off my tie, slip the sweater on, and I look like a normal business guy!

I like the sweater. If worn correctly it looks clean and simple. When the temperatures are mild I stick with the blazer and hat every time. Anything below 32 degrees, which is almost everyday since most of my flying is in upstate NY, I wear the sweater under the overcoat and it still looks good to go. Unless the company is going to issue me one, I am not spending 400 for a leather jacket that I will wear 1/4 of the year. Purchased my overcoat for 150 bucks and the sweater was 40. Boom! Savings at its best. I can also wear the overcoat with any suit or business casual wear as well.

Never apologise for looking or acting like a professional. It always makes me laugh that some of the loudest complainers about how pilots aren't treated professionally by the public are the least professional looking or acting among us. If you want to be treated like a professional you have to look and act like one first.

I take pride in my uniform and wear it proudly. I keep it pressed, my shoes in decent condition, and my hat remains on my head as my FOM states it should. Once we start dressing down the uniform piece by piece the profession loses something piece by piece.

Ladies love the sweater and I don't mind spilling Texas Pete on it compared to the white shirt.

Don't like them at all, I am with the, if your cold wear a jacket crowd. This winter hasn't been bad in EWR but last year when there was snow on the ground everyday and the mornings in ITH, ROC, BDL, SYR, BUF... You get my point were in the single digits with 20-30knt winds I wore long johns and a long sleeve shirt with long sleeve undershirt. That is how you stay warm.

This. Why are pilots so interested in what other pilots are wearing? The hat is optional at my company and I wear it, people love to point it out when I do. As if I were unaware.

Alas, this is a sweater discussion. I find it practical, and comfortable, as well as professional. I don't see an issue with it. If someone wants to buy me a nice leather jacket to wear, I'm all for it but until then I'll wear something that is 1/10th the cost, is less bulky, keeps me just as warm and that I can keep on in or out of the cockpit.

Thankfully, I don't have to wear the traditional pilot uniform. It has been discussed off and on, and if for some reason I had to get into the uniform deal, the first purchase I would make is the sweater.

You guys are totally missing out. The Flight Suit cannot be beat. It's comfortable(ish), no ironing, no goofy tie, doesn't show ketchup stains, and absolutely screams at the top of its lungs HEY HOLY CHRIST LOOK AT THIS GUY HE IS A FREAKING PILOTTTTTT!@ I'm thinking about giving the rest of my clothes to Goodwill and wearing it 24/7/365.
