Dude, you are the tall guy who likes to be called Seth, and was wearing the baseball hat, and who also read the answer to the question, "what is weight?" that the teacher asked. ;)

It's funny, because I was going to make a member announcement about me starting the program today, and I thought it would be funny, if someone in class knew about JC.

We have to get those JC stickers for the toolboxes.

Anyways, see you tomorrow at class. :)

Haha.....no way. :insane: Yet another example of how small the aviation community really is.

Good luck with your training guys!

The only things I can tell you are, ask lots of questions, make lots of mistakes, learn the paperwork inside and out, and sometimes even though the lockwire looks fine, cut it and redo it.

And take advantage of the Snap On discount as much as your wallet will allow.

Buy a decent flashlight. Something roughly the size of a AA Maglite, but higher quality.

    Buy some Gearwrenches.

That tube inside some airplanes that has a funnel-looking thing on the end? That's not an intercom, no matter what the more senior students tell you.

Don't try to save a botched safety wire job. Just let it go, man. Start over.

And finally, here's something that even the most experienced mechanic uses every day: Righty-tighty, lefty-loosey.

    Thanks for the advice :)

As for tools, I got all of them, and the toolbox (26 in, seven drawers roller cabinet), through the snap-on student discount, very good deal.

I'm sitting on my desk, taking a little break from homework. A bunch of Weight&Balance exercises.

We placed the Queen Air on jacks last Friday for one of the Weight&Balance projects,.....good times.

    Hey Newbies!

Now that you are starting out new and fresh you really want to get ahead of everyone else in the world of aviation maintenance. The following is a list of tech tips that you should review in class with your instructor.

1.) Make sure you have plenty of 'Prop Wash'. Usually comes in 5 gallon buckets.
2.) If you hear squeeking when the engine is running make sure you check those hard to reach 'muffler bearings".
3.) When you start working on an airframe and you drilled where you werent suppose to make sure to purchase a 'hole mover'. Ask your Snap-On dealer. Best prices in town!
4.) It always comes up at the worst time when something in the electrical system goes wrong so make sure you carry extra flux capacitors in your pocket.

Sharing these tips should really make you stand out!

    :)

Hey, good luck in school guys. There are too many PCC grads in the hangar at my work to count. I seems like they have a good program. No matter what the community college route is definitely the best way to go in this business.

Definitely take advantage of snap-on discounts, but do it later when you know this is the career for you. Many people start A&P school, but not as many finish. I am not sure how it goes at PCC, but at the community college I went to, only half of those who started finished. For right now Harbor Freight is the best way to go. I get all my expendable tools there and for the most part the quality is usually alright(be careful though some of it is junk). Get all the tools from snap-on you can during the end of your schooling.

For flashlights, I personally am a fan of Mag-lites. While your in school I'd recommend getting 3 AA cell mag with the LED conversion(straight from Mag, the imitation conversions suck in my opinion). It is almost as bright as my 2 D cell version with LED conversion. It is also small and easy to get into tight places. The 2 AA will work, but is nowhere near as bright as the 3 AA.

Also invest in a good head lamp if you plan to go to an airline. You will be on grave yard at one point and everything is done in the dark. The most popular headlamp manufacturer in the hangar by far is Coast. They are a bit pricey, but you can't beat the quality and brightness of their LED headlamps.

Who knows, maybe one day soon I will see you guys on the "other" side of PDX.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about Horizon Air.

I've got a mechanic buddy at Horizon named Seung. Korean Guy, glasses, mid-30's, has a short red Craftsman box with a label I stuck on there years ago that says "SEUNGNAMI"

You don't know him by any chance, do you?

Yeah, I was an inspector at Regions. I'm glad he's on with a good company now. I haven't talked to him in a while, I think I'll email him and say hello.

I liked our Snap-on dealer. He had the same first name as me and got us a discount and even called us when they came in. We have some other company now we deal with whch is a lot more than Snap-On. Make sure you know the FAR's (Federal Aviation Regulations), that was a difficult part for me. Dealing with safety wiring was the other one. I got the hang of it after a few times.:D

Have fun and good luck with your classes!
