Is DME required? SNA LDA 19R

    I was looking at this plate from another forum and thought it was interesting.

    There is no DME in the title, no DME required anywhere on the plate. Yet it says use DME to identify IAF/FAF TUSTI. It also has a timing table which would also mean you don't need necessarily need DME for the approach. The note makes it seem like DME is required to identify an important fix but does not require DME anywhere on the plate.

    What do you think?

    Can't TUTSI also be identified by passing thru the SLI R-080? I didn't see anything on that chart that would necessitate DME.

    I dont believe DME is required since every fix on the approach could be identified as an intersection off SLI. I believe that note is just there to clarify which navaid you should base DME on if that's what you are using to identify the steps.

    I think they put that note in when there are multiple navaids displayed on the approach that "could" give you DME and might cause confusion. In that plate, I'm betting SLI has DME too.

    Sort of like the ILS at COE, since you have the localizer signal on one channel but need a second to pull DME from the VOR... so the same type of note about DME source note is in the profile box on that plate http://155.178.201.160/d-tpp/1206/00527ILD5.PDF. The difference with COE of course is that DME is in fact required because there are no intersections to identify the steps. But I think the note is there just as an extra "hey pay attention" thing.

    That's just my best guess.

    Looks like you can use the radials off Seal Beach, but I see what you're saying. That note makes it sound like you are supposed to ID the fix with DME on the LOC course.

    The thing that is confusing is the cross and use the LDA DME in the profile view.

    That seems to be the best explanation. I never noticed it before on other plates but it makes sense to avoid confusion on which DME to use.

    Terrible note! I would miss it for sure if I had to set up for this approach quickly! I'm going with no, it's not required, even though it is or is it?... :bang::D

    That's what I was reading...the fact that each fix is annotated as a DME distance kind of infers DME required...but I agree SLI radials should provide you info needed as long as you are on the LOC.

    If it were required, me thinks it would be in the title (name) of the approach.
    The dme lets you id the fix, and use the second ILS (receiver) the way it is supposed to be used, and not tying it up for radials.

    Ahhh... GPS rocks, does it not?

    Eh, it doesn't really.

    As stated:
    I do as a matter of fact.

    There is a note on the plate, in the briefing strip: "Use IOJW DME when on LDA course." Each fix is also presented with the normal cross radial and D10.2 IOJW indication.

    First post! My guess, I'm going to say no, because it's not in the title. :D Also, you can ID the fix with cross radials. Same deal with the MAP, you could use DME to be much more precise, or just go missed via your time from FAF. I guess that note was put in to help with possible confusion?

    Since you could also receive DME information off the SLI VORTAC, that makes sense - that's why the note is there, so there is no ambiguity as to which DME source you should use while on the final approach course.

    By the way, required equipment can also be named in a note as well as in the procedure title: "DME or RADAR required."
