I have recently decided I wanted to adopt a child from abroad - specifically Asia. I recently had a pt whose storied blew my mind and really made me intrigued and wanting to help. I think my wife and I would be good adoptive parents and I welcome the opportunity to make our family more colorful. Does anyone have any experience?

My aunt used to run an adoption agency in Florida that specialized in adoptions of Guatemalan babies by American parents.

From what I understand, it's a long process with a lot of red tape that requires a great deal of patience.

My husband told me his brother wanted us to raise his little boy (so that he would have more opportunities here). I asked the attorney about it when I was there. She said it would be extremely expensive and lengthy (at least from an immigration standpoint, as you have that on top of the adoption).

Have you looked domestic at all? There are some great kids who need homes. Cheaper than overseas though the government red tape can be a big hassle.

I admire anyone that will take this type of action.....a good heart and love is what they need.

That having been stated, I second BLACKHAWK's sentiment. There are a ton of kids that are right here in the States that will benefit from your efforts. AND at the cost, you and your wife could adopt 2 for the cost of one international!! ;)

Expect to spend around $40,000 for a kid from China, and the only children that they're adopting out right now are special needs.

Look at some of the kids available in your state via child protection. You may be surprised and start seeing some that seem like a good fit. Also know up front that even the best of these kids are going to have some issues after being taken away from or abandoned by their parents. I think it is assumed that something like 75% of the girls over 8 have been sexually abused. You will not get to see this information unless they think you are a good match for a child, but you can back out at any point.
You will not see many infants on the website unless they have serious issues. Normally infants are adopted before even making it to that point. Once you are approved if you tell them you are interested in infants they contact you if one becomes available.
Be aware that the process of getting approved for domestic adoption can take up to a year, so don't assume you can adopt a child you see today if you are not yet approved.

If I could, I would adopt every unwanted child in America. No child should grow up unloved, no parents, hungry, etc.
