I bought the anywheremap system a little over a year ago when every plane I flew did not include a GPS, after 4 months of using it I moved to a CFI position at a school where every plane include a GPS so this has been sitting in my closet collecting dust and it is time it finds a new home. System includes: Dell Axim X51 PDA and its appropriate cradle and USB cable to charge it Bluetooth wireless GPS reciever Universal Yoke mount Anywhere map software Pocket plates software (all approach plates in the US) as a bonus to the airplanes without a ciggarette lighter I am also including a 12 volt mini battery (pictured) that will run the GPS for over 6 hours. Also have all documentation and manuals Condition is like new on all parts. The database is no longer current and can be still used for situational awareness only or can be updated through their website. New the system was $845.00 plus $145 for the pocket plates plus $100 for the battery for a total cost to me of $1090.00 I am asking $700 or best offer. do a search on the website www.anywheremap.com to find out more of its features. If you are considering any other unit take a look at this one, it has great features when compared to units that cost much more.

Saw your plug in another thread and I have given it consideration... What worries me, honestly, is using a device for GPS which isn't dedicated or designed for it...I realize I've never used the unit, and that my perceptions may be wrong, but that's just the feeling I get. I also worry a little bit about obsolescence. PDA platforms have a short shelf life, whereas you need this application to last a little longer. If Dell drops Axim support, Anywhere Map would have no choice but to follow suit at some point. A dedicated GPS unit (such as a Garmin or one of the others) will go obsolete over a longer timeline because of the proprietary nature of the hardware. I think. You seem really happy with the Anywhere Map - these are just some of my concerns. Are they unfounded?

I thought of the same things as well as far as the unit possibly becoming obsolete and as complex stated the pros outweighed the cons. I have used the PDA as a logbook as well as perdiem workbook and have stored all of my contacts in it. When I am in the FBO bored I use the WIFI to surf the internet and then check the weather and file my flightplan. You can not do those things with a garmin and if you are at an FBO without internet you have to resort to plan B. IF the unit were to no longer be supported by dell my plan was to give the dell to my wife since it is a great PDA OR sell it on EBAY and then I would buy the next best thing off ebay myself and simply load the software since I own the software and can transfer it as needed. It would come at a slight cost in the end of things but I figured that was a chance I could take and the cost would be minimum as compared to the other uses that I have gotten from the PDA in the long run.

Have you ever had any signal loss, interference problems, or issues with using the bluetooth receiver on the dash of the plane? I would think the RF energy might affect either the compass or something, but I'm not sure. Still learning this stuff. Sending you a PM with some other questions...

I have also used it while driving, and have lost GPS signal due to hills, etc. but I have liked having the XM weather even when driving in bad weather.

I had the older system with the old IPAQ for about 4 years, then last year upgraded to the Dell, The system works great and I've never had any interference problems. I really like the bluetooth, the old system had way too many wires. Customer Service has alway been stellar. Bill

I've got the same thing on the HP4700 and absolutely love it. After flying with the XM weather, I can not imagine ever flying anywhere without it again. I've used the Garmin products as well and I'd say the Garmin is probably a little more user friendly but is only built for one purpose. The Anywhere Map system allows you to use the PDA for whatever you want. Pocket Plates are pretty sweet too. I'm selling my airplane soon so I'll probably be selling my Anywhere Map if anybody's interested. Don't mean to hijack the thread though.

Thing is, I've already got a good PDA/email/wifi toy in that I have an iPhone. I asked the lady at AnywhereMap if they were going to develop to the iPhone since the software development kit was out and they could, theoretically, bind it to the GPS receiver. She didn't know. I managed to get my hands on a 496 and play with it some yesterday - not that I would ever buy one, but it gave me a better idea of what a 296 would be like and/or the screen size on the larger PDA units. Just gotta think it over for the time being. Really appreciate the information from you guys.
