| Today I practiced engine failure while on approach in the sim. Ultimately I was able to keep control and land safely. Since I was in simulated IMC and I could not see the yaw when adding power I was not completely sure how to react to what the panel was telling me. What exactly am I looking for in what the 6 pack is telling me? My thoughts are in a right engine failure initially I would see the DG turning counterclockwise uncommanded and ball to the left. Then if left uncorrected I would start to see a roll to the right on the AI and TC. Of coarse the reverse would be true for a left failure. |

The airplane starts rolling as indicated by the AI and TC, you keep it level with the ailerons. The airplane starts yawing as indicated by the HI and ball, you put in a little bit of rudder to stop it. The nose drops, you pull up slightly to keep it level. You can do all of that without any aural indications or looking at the engine instruments, and you've naturally put yourself in straight and level side-slip condition. Now put in the 2-5* bank, the appropriate rudder pressure and pitch for blue line, and you're in a zero side slip happily chugging along in the clouds.

| Old Skool | In the sim you can also look at the oil pressure ane temp gauges..... I know the frasca sim that is what I would use from time to time to figure it out..... But the rest of the suggestions work just as fine as well! |
