| Old Skool | My roomies and I are having an argument over this question that has come up... During what time of day, does an air mass thunderstorm over water reach it's greatest intensity? morning, afternoon, evening, or night

| I would think somewhere in the afternoon. My basis is that the typical hottest part of the day is 1 or 2 pm; however, over water it may occur slightly later, due to the ability of water to retain heat longer, further promoting convection. So the ingredients of unstable air and the lifting force could last longer than if it were over land. Given the moisture is present, the question is how long will the unstable air and lifting force last? Who knows!

| ![]() The water has absorbed the maximum amount of heat that it can. The air is cooling down, creating a larger and larger temperature differential between the water and the air. The heat being returned from the water back into the air now has the greatest potential to cause lifting of the air above.

| Old Skool | That is what I thought. Thanks guys. So hypothetically if you had to pick evening or night which one would be right. I am saying night.

Though I might just be thinking in Italian because "Buona sera" is what you say until probably around midnight or so. | |
