I flew DL last week & for 2 legs (ATL-DCA & back) was on 88s. I noticed shortly after T/O a kind of burnt rubbery smell coming from the air vents. Do the packs do that when cold or is it just another random system quirk? (I noticed this on AA's 80s also) And Doug, I asked both CAs if they had flown w/ you; they hadn't, but one knew of & liked JC. I ended up on a 76 back to SEA (loved the fan growl!). How do you like it compared w/ the 88?

Mad dog question, hoo hoo! I know all about the mad dog! ![]() Quote:
That's the last I've heard, perhaps there's a new theory floating around. Quote:
ATL's MD-88 base is massive and there's been a lot of fresh faces so chances are they probably haven't flown with me. Quote:
Love it. Love it. Love it. Plush, but powerful and responsive like a BMW 7-series, ultra-reliable, handles well both in the low- and high-speed regime, the systems make sense -- Boeing can certainly build an airplane.

The smell is residue burning out of the APU ducts...as it's shut down just prior to takeoff...and the fumes get dispersed to thru the various ducts. It all burns off within minutes after takeoff...but the odor can be pretty strong.

Here is a question for Mad-dog drivers. http://www.airliners.net/open.file/0649906/L/ Go to this picture and tell me what is the instrument at the top-right it's grey and has 7 numbers and a few buttons around it. What is that instrument and what is each number / button for? Thanks, TB

![]() Nah, I think it's something with the DFDR, but none of the planes I've flown have a unit like that.

Very cool about the 76--glad you're liking it! What about the 90 was so nice (other than the pair of V2500s @ the rear)?

A lot of the systems were "fixed", hydraulically augmented pitch, easier electrical system and the FADEC was certainly a crew pleaser.

Aww, no more "19, below 90" (or whatever that temp is)? No EGTs flashing @ you warning of an impending hot start?
