182RG manual gear extension

A CFI was telling me while we did a manual gear extension that you should shorten the pump strokes with the handle to be 1/2 pump, then 1/4 pump as you got closer to having the gear fully extended because if it's all the way down and you have the handle up, you can't push it down because you'd be pumping and forcing the gear futher.

Is this true? I would think there would be a relief valve so the hydraulics don't take out the gear when it's against the stops. Can't I pump all I want after it's down and locked and it won't hurt anything?

The ole 82RG manual is out in my car but I'll take a stab at it...

It seems like logical advice thinking about it - but you'll definately know when you've pretty much pumped as much as your gonna squeeze into those lines ... after about 10-14 pumps you have to be superman to keep going...

To my knowledge there isn't a relief valve built into the system connected to the manual extension... someone definately jump in if I'm wrong... but they'll pop down once you've got enough pressure rebuilt... unless you've developed more than a leak... then just enjoy the ride and pump away all you want..
