Default On Cloud Nine

I'm reading Bill Bryson's "A Short History of Nearly Everything". The Interntational Cloud Atlas published in 1896 classified clouds into ten basic types. Classification #9 was the "plumpest and most cushiony-looking cumulonimbus". It appears this is the source of the expression "to be on cloud nine".

Thought you might find it interesting.

Indeed.

Now, what are the origins of the word "treshold" or "Tresh hold", as in runway or door threshold?

'Nother good one... "balls to the wall" -an all out effort- from having the throttles/props (with their knobbed grips) pushed all the way forward, or firewalled.

"the whole 9 yards"

See loading .50 cal rounds into the fighters during ww2.

The length of the complete belt was 9 yards.

/me thinks... might have to double check

Rule of thumb....

Back in the good 'ol days (colonial), men were permitted to beat their wives with sticks no greater than the diameter of their thumb. Hence "rule of thumb."

Now where'd I put my stick again.....the beatings will continue!

I've read that book about 5 times now (actually its on audio on my ipod for the train rides to work, so I've listened to it 5 times) it's an amazing book, really got be hooked on science agagin. If you read that and "Guns, Germs, and Steel", and a "Breif History of Time" (a little more technical) then you'll know everying in the world.
