Default Exemption 3585 & ETP Alternates

Does anyone know if exemption 3585 applies to an ETP alternate? My ops manual is awfully vague about this. But I am pretty certain that Ops Specs exemption 3585 only applies when dispatching to the destination and respective destination alternates.

I don't believe it applies to takeoff or ETP or any other alternate weather requirements.

Anyone have comments?

Good question. I'll email Willie Dorna (JFK LCA) and see what he thinks.

I am under the impression that ETP alternates are not treated the same as departure or arrival alternates. This came from a discussion on the way to Bermuda one day. ILM is the ETP alternate, but as someone who actually lives in ILM, I felt that CHS was a mo' better place to go. The captain, (who was also a LCA,) agreed and said that ETPs are really only for planning.

3585 does NOT apply to take off alternates according to our POI.

What's an ETP?

ETP = Equal Time Point

So the best I can figure, the number of abbreviations a pilot has is directly proportional to their pay scale?

(thanks Don)

Here goes:

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you but I wanted to make sure my answer was the correct one. I confirmed it with ATL and we all agree that NO, 3585 cannot be used with ETP alternates.

One thing that may and is confusing is FOM page 5-1.4 "EXTENDED OVERWATER DISPATCH", may seem to be part of the 3585 explanation but it really is not part of it. That statement is separate from 3585.

Hope this helps and please feel free to email or call me at any time.
