Default Training/certs required to install avionics?

What type of certificates are required to install avionics? Do you have to be an A&P? I am about to take my General Radiotelephone Operator License exams which will allow me to internally repair and test aviation radios and navigation equipment, among other things. I don't envision opening an avionics shop, but rather getting a job as an avionics tech. I'm getting the license for other reasons (commercial radio) but am interested in furthering my aviation credentials (I'm a CFI now).

Thanks

I was an avionics tech for 12 years and the military, 4 years as a QA inspector and have my GROL, seems without an A&P though no one wants you!
