If your takeoff airport is below landing mins, you need a takeoff alternate. I believe it has to be within 1 hour flying time on a single engine in a twin engine jet. 6/6/6 rule is the RVR readings you need to depart. Each airlines ops specs is different. You should really be asking someone who works for that airline about these things.

121.617 Alternate Airports for Departure Cannot dispatch if weather is going to be below landing minimums for the departure airport at time of takeoff from departure airport Exceptions 2 engine aircraft- Alternate airport within 1 hour from departure airport at normal cruise speed with one engine inoperative 3+ engine aircraft- Alternate airport within 2 hours from departure airport at normal cruise speed with one engine inoperative "What if RVR was 6-6-5? Could we still go and why/why not? What if 6-Missing-6? 8-8-5 RVR could we go?" The above question was asked in one of another JCERs Eagle interview A usefull table: Takeoff Minimia.........................Runway Facilities Required Visibility 1/4 mile......................HIRL or CL or RCLM or Adequate Visual References Touchdown RVR 1600................(Touchdown RVR + HIRL) or Adequate Visual References or CL or RCLM Touchdown RVR 500 Midfield RVR 500 Rollout RVR 500.........................(CL + RCLM + Touchdown RVR + Midfield RVR + Rollout RVR) I have no idea where the 6-6-6 rule comes from. I have seen it on Jepp Plates, but I have never seen it in any FAR. If I was answering the question above, I would say yes, provided that all those items above are listed. If any body else has any good IFR takeoff questions that they got in an interview, chime in, because I might be interviewing with that special airline in a few weeks. |

The 5/5/5 rule and 6/6/6 rule are the same. UPS just got 5/5/5 approved and we were 6/6/6 before that.

You would probably be expected to know the standard part 121 takeoff minimums, ie 1 sm for 2 engines or less and 1/2 sm for more than 2 engines. | |

The rule is actually in the Jepp introduction section (near the end). My interview at AE also included questions on the 6/6/6 rule. Not complicated, just unknown to the CFI.
