How much of a crosswind component do you need to have to crab that much in something that size?

Approach speeds are really low in that machine, for it's weight. 140s at most weights. You can do the math on the crab angles!

When it took off it looked like the wings just wanted to fall off.

I commented on another thread. Essentially, we need the lift NOW. I am sure the company beat the bushes to try to get enough MD11s to make up for the shortfall. The 777s will not make up for the A380 lift loss, nor the other issues that led to the A380 decision. My bet is that they will turn around and make a new order for A380s, but not until the delivery date is very firm, and probably at a better price than they got the first time. In the meantime, the 777 carries about what an MD11 can, but has more range for the payload, so it will allow a few direct flights out of points that would not otherwise be possible.
