Default How do I log this?

Hello fellow enthusiasts,
earlier I flew in the right seat of an IFR flight. The flight was IFR at some points and VFR at others. So my question is, could I log this time as SIC? I did help with flying at certain points and with technical things. He was paying attention to the gauges while I was being the eyes. I am not IFR rated but I am rated in that plane. Any info?

... I checked the regs but did not a clear awnser. I do not think I can log this time as anything important, but just want to make sure.

You could log it as safety pilot time, being that it could be either PIC or SIC depending on what you and the other pilot arranged prior to the flight.

You can only log it as safety pilot time if he was in simulated instrument (under the hood) in VFR conditions. It sounds like the other pilot was in IMC for a period and then back to VFR...so you can only log the time if you were actually flying the plane in VFR conditions.

What was "help with flying at certain points"?

ahh ok, I am a bit rusty on it I guess. I am pretty sure you do not need to actually fly the plane though to log safety pilot, while I do agree with the part in regards to VFR only.

Nope...you don't need to fly at all. Once their under the hood, you're responsible for "being the eyes" in VFR conditions. Once the hood comes off, you can't log anymore, unless of course you take over the controls...

Technically you would have to have arrange it prior to flight that you would be the safety pilot PIC while the sole manipulator was under simulator IFR conditions (under the hood). Then anytime that he was logging SIM IFR you could log PIC time.

He already told us that this was a flight under IFR and he's not instrument rated. Safety pilot PIC is out of the question. I think so is safety pilot SIC. See 61.51(e)(1)(iii) and 61.51(f)(2). That aside, I didn't see anything about the other pilot wearing a hood. No hood, no safety pilot requirement to begin with, no logging of anything based on being one.

The the friend gave him some flying duties, he could log the sole manipulator time as PIC under 61.51(e)(1)(i).

aviatorrbt, unless you fit into one of those categories, you were a helpful passenger, nothing more.

I did fly the plane myself for like 20 minutes while he was doing some IFR calculations or something... but it looks like I was just more of a helpful passenger!
