Default Runway in backyard

What do I need to do to have authorization to use my backyard as a runway for a plane? What do people do do have their strips put on the charts?

I'm sure that there are some regs that will be posted...(I'll let someone else chime in on that one), but there was a story on the news recently about a helicopter pilot who fought to have a landing pad for his helo. His neighbors were complaining about the noise. look at my post under the HELO section ( helicopter pilot fights to land in his backyard). I believe there is a link to the news broadcast as well.

The neighbors at my parents house put in a paved Helo Pad with windsock and lights about a year ago. There are at least 20 homes nearby surrounding his 8 acres or so. He didn't warn anyone about it. Luckily he has only landed his large Eurocopter there a few times in the past year.

First step is your local zoning board/commission. Depending on your local laws, an airport may be against code, so you might need a waiver, or not. Just depends.
