Default Spiral on Turbofan Spinners...

This may seem like a dumb question to the "experts," but ever since I was a little kid I've always wondered why do a lot of airliners have a spiral design on the spinner on the turbofan?

I have two theories:

1) So people will be able to see that the engine is running from far away and keep their distance so they don't get sucked into the intake.

2) It's a mass conspiracy of airlines trying to hypnotize people.

That's all I could think of. Anybody have any ideas or know the answer? Is there an FAR or some law regarding having them? I don't think all aircraft have them...

Probably because it looks cool when it spins.

Or for ground ops folks to be able to see if one is still running?

The gigantic airplane racing towards them doesn't scare them enough so they had to paint a spiral on the spinner?

I believe noticing the movement is supposed to alert ground crews that the engine is starting. Not necessarily for high speed operation, but for just the moments when it is beginning to turn... because in like 30 seconds that thing is going to suck and chop you up.
