Has anyone else ever noticed the distinct and cool sounding hum in the background on all United Airlines transmissions? Does anyone know the reason for this? I can't figure it out because other airlines have the same aircraft with presumably the same radios... I think it sounds cool. Does anyone have an explanation? You can usually hear it here: http://audio.liveatc.net:8012/ksfo_twr.m3u |

I bet somebody at Airliners.net could tell you. Seriously. I'm not making fun of A.net. I swear. |

Might be the brand of radio the airline uses.

Could be a 60Hz hum produced by the frequency of the power supply becoming impressed onto the signal because of improper filtering or shielding...I've heard it a lot....never thought much about it

Could also be the type of headsets the company supplies.

I've also heard the noise Nwa757 is talking about. On United aircraft, it is always the 757/767 and usually none others. Sometimes another airline's 757 or 767 makes the noise. I've never heard it on an Airbus or 737. To know exactly what he is talking about it's in the background of the UAL93 hijacking ATC sound clips.

It's the AC power hum as someone already mentioned. I've heard it on many airplanes, not just United's, and I've heard many United airplanes without the hum. What does it really mean? It means that the radio needs a new noise filter.

You also hear this hum on radio transmissions from some aircraft-it's the 400Hz hum from the generators/alternators. Caused by poor shielding and grounding. I even hear it on the music channels on some aircraft.

The radios in one of the 182s I fly have that hum, and believe me, it ain't so cool after a while. More like inducing one to jab icepicks into one's ears.

It's 400hz AC not 60hz.
