| That's why I love helos, you can just come in nice and slow and if there's a hole, you just add some torque and fly over it! ![]() |

| [ QUOTE ] Good info! Question: Is the J-model forecast to be integrated into the MC mission anytime down the road, either Talon or Shadow...or for that matter Spectre? [/ QUOTE ] From the rumors I've heard the J-model is still having some issues with props. The new 6 blade composit props are not holding up very well from a maintenace standpoint; especially in sandy environments. The few units that have the cargo version say that most of them are still hanger queens. I did see one flying around when I was in Kuwait, but I think I recall it being a British airplane. At that time (last summer) none of the USAF J-models were deployable to that part of the world yet. I'm sure eventually they'll get all the bugs worked out and I could definately see the J-model filling that role. They re-desigend a major portion of the airplane and I don't think they'll let all that money go to waist. -Dave |

| Hawker, Say hello to Big "E" Cardin, and B. Murphy from the 15th if you see them. Know they weren't on that bird, but do know one of the loads that was on it. Still haven't heard if he was one with broken arm or not. Just glad they made it thru this one ok, the 15th has not had much luck in the last few years...lost my best friend on the bird in Puerto Rico crash. Praise The Load! Kevin |

| Good points all. Kinda sux. We don't have many special ops aircraft to spare. I am one of the guys safety calls out to take photos when someone dents an aircraft. Yeah they are trying to fit the J into every mission possible. Don't know how that will go with the latest budget / sad story of J procurement in general ( stopping or not stopping ) and other issues like the health of the E models. Commando Solo ( electronic support flown by Penn Guard ) just got some J varients of for that mission. Saw them here at the depot. The hurricane hunter J story is one that is just better left not mentioned. ![]() The J thing and C-130 health in general is going to become one big soap opera if a solid replacement path isn't agreed on by all the politicos and our lovely military-industrial-complex types who always have the best interest$ of the nation at heart. The one solid thing is the great skill of the C-130 crews and maintainers that manage to get the job done, even with all the drama. |

| Little Rock AFB already has the J's for crew chief training and we're(Kirtland AFB) scheduled to get CV-22's in early 06' and the J's a little later than that. |

I talked to a Pave Low gunner at Herbie when I was down there, and his gig was that he'll get out of Spec Ops before ever crewing a V-22. |

| Ohh man, the V-22 sucks! I was part of the first sea trials which comprised of the LHA compatability flights. It's got too many moving parts for me, and I flew in helos! The trial didn't fair too well. First it blew a firehose reel off the bulkhead and sent the hose reel flying about the deck. The second incidnet had a blue shirt blow overboard and the third and final incident was a mechanical failure of one of the drive shafts and gears. It sent metal shavings everywhere. They had to crane it off in Norfolk when the ship pulled into port. |

| Here's a little JCs connection ... I was based in Kuwait, at the same base this airplane+crew were based, when this happened. The flight crew lived in the "dorm" next to me. I got to talk with some of them the next day, alot of bruises. One of the Army Crew member referenced is a good friend of mine, also from my home station. In fact the C-23 Unit was one of the receipiants of the JCs Care Package that year. I was part of the Army after-action review on the incident and spent 3 days in Bagdad reviewing procedures for the issuance and sharing of NOTAMS. I can't go into detail but the "failure" in the system got fixed. It's a small world! Jim

| Newbie | I remember seeing the new concrete when I arrived at that Air Field when I got to Iraq, and thought man that would hurt someone, then later found out about the C-130, so I understand about the NOTAMS and stuff over there, being a Crew Member on Hawks |

| Fascinating how after all that, no one was seriously hurt. The first thing that came to mind when I saw those pics was "I hope that's not Castle Airport." ![]()
