Default American/Canadian IFR Procedures

I'm just started my IREX in Mel., Australia which is the theoretical component of the command instrument rating down here. I've been told that NDB's are being phased out over the next two or so years and that NDB/NPA are becoming a thing of the past with GPS precision approaches taking the reins -

The Australian airspace and flight rules are somewhat tailoring to what the FAA follows -- so --

-- do you still have NDB/NPA's or is everything GPS now?
(besides ILS,DME etc approaches)

thanks

Oh, we have lots and lots of NDB's. Hopefully, they'll get rid of those dreaded things....

When I was flying freight a couple years ago, we flew Canada trips regularly. They still like their NDBs up there, at least more than in the U.S. (i.e. there were times when we would be given clearances to navigate to/from an NDB, which I've never experienced here except when shooting an NDB approach). I think you're more likely to get an NDB approach up there, too...at least for the moment. I'm sure they're on their way out just like in the U.S. though.

First approach I did to minimums was an NDB... what a scary experience. However, I still can't go as far as to say they should get rid of 'em... if they did, they'd phase out ADF's... than I couldn't listen to football or baseball on those crazy long cross countries. Definitely not worth it.

As for if they're still in use in the U.S., they are... but it really depends on your area. In some states, like Minnesota (midwest) they're all over.... in Arizona however (southwest) they're few and far between. Pretty much all NDB approaches have a GPS overlay now... but I learned instruments in a 172 without the luxury of a GPS... so the NDB became a necessity for me!
