Default type rating in 121

Question from a prevous thread:

If training for FO is similar to type rating that captains get for the same a/c, why don't the airlines type rate their FO at the same time? It seems odd (and more expensive for airlines) to go through the same training and then get a type rating separetely during the upgrade.

Default Re: type rating in 121

With the type rating, the F/O is now more qualified for other companies. The F/O must go through upgrade training no matter if they are typed or not.
