| Agent Smith | Something is certainly strange as I'm in Asia/Europe/Middle East (Turkey) and the site is blazing. Maybe someone in the US went "Wal Mart" with DNS servers... 7ms jumps until it hits level3.net in the US. Keep posting the traceroutes when you have problems.

| I get periods of really slow JC access as well. Most times it is very quick, but a few times a week it is almost unusable. I am on an 8mb connection, but I figured it was some routing issue between the server and me. I will try to run a trace route the next time it happens. |

| I've got another slow day. for a while it wasn't coming up at all. By the time I got around to the trace it was just going slow. Looks to me like Hostway is the culprit on this one! Just after I ran the wget I reloaded the page and it took 30 seconds or more..... One reason for this is Wget will not wait for the ads to load.. it grabs the links and moves on. | Junior Member | Try this.. When you are experencing slow page loads right click the page and select view source. This is the raw html that the server is sending to your browser. If you scan through the text you will see that the page has loaded but it is yet to be displayed. I think that it is the javascript loading the ads. 57ms from your tracert is good. That all went (whoosh) way over my head. ![]() Question for you though, since you seem to know your stuff...I'm running Opera, and (don't tell Doug but) I have the browser set to block the ads. Would I still have the slow loads from "the javascipt loading the ads"? Also, why would there be a variation in apparent website responsiveness if it were a javascript issue? Oh, and a third question ( ), would it help Doug troubleshoot the issue if I ran some of the other programs like you just did (pathping and viewing the source)?(I am sooooo over my head here.)

| Junior Member | With regards to Opera it would depend on how it blocks the ad's that counts. If the browser loads and executes the JavaScript but you don’t see the images (perhaps a red X in a white square) the java is still being run. Good point about the lack of uniformity of page loads... why so quick... why so slow ?? In another tab I have the aviation thread open.. This is at the bottom.. src='http://www.jetcareers.com/phpads/adframe.php?n=a0a41be0&what=zone:3&source= jetcareers&target=_blank&refresh=120' framespacing='0' frameborder='no' scrolling='no' width='468' height='60'><a href='http://www.jetcareers.com/phpads/adclick.php?n=a0a41be0' target='_blank'> So the adds are generated from the addframe php script in what looks like a frame. I wonder if frames are processed in a hierarchy...therefore the add frame is near the top and any delays hold up the whole page load.... but this is speculation!! tracroutes help where there are network issues. However ICMP (Internet Connection Management Protocol) is normally weighted as a low priority therefore the results can be misleading (traceroute and ping use ICMP) but it can be a piece of the puzzle. Also I suspect that the host that we ping is just the wan side of a load balancer so we are not reaching the actual www server. Having had to trouble shoot networking and systems related issues before tracerts and pings are always welcome. .. I kinda prefer the graphing tool that I used (cacti) because it ignores all the java and just grabs the content. |

| for those who are having problems, what internet browser are you using? You may have filters on, or other settings on or off which can greatly affect your load times. On these pages there are all sorts of scripts, pictures, animations... if just one of those sends an alert to your filters for security, privacy.. etc.. then the browser will spend a decade trying to authenticate, authorize and check to see if it is safe to open according to your settings.. so, which internet browsers are you using?

| I use IE7 and FF 2.0.0.4 at work. my browsers at work have no filters because I do tech support for websites. at home I am on a mac and mostly use FF. Sometimes I'll use Safari but not too often. Usually only to test if the slowness is in both browsers. At home I have a 10MB connection from cox. I don't know the speeds at work but it's fast. Ever since fly_for_bandwidth has been monitoring the site I haven't had any slowness. The site has been loading as fast as any other site which is making making me .If I do experience it though I'll post trace and ping info. |

| wouldn't you know that as soon as I say the site is going fast, it doesntload at all. it was for a really short time though. Just for fun i typed forums.jetcareers.com into the addy bar of IE7. Request timed out. to make sure i went back to FF which still had this page on the screen and I clicked on General topics. Request timed out. immediatly did a trace and ping. after I did the first set of tests i tested from browser and it loaded fine....weird. does seem like it was just a hiccup in Dallas. Quote:
