Default student logbooks

question for all of you Purduvian flight school students. do you guys/gals have personal logbooks you hold or does the school hold onto your logbook for you??

You have to buy a Purdue logbook which lasts through the completion of your multiengine training at which point you can take it home. Although the Purdue logbook is your official logbook (it has all your CFI signatures), I and a lot of other people kept our own personal logbooks and also got them signed by our CFIs.

How do you like this? Personally, I think this is dumb. And somehow I'd feel ripped off for some reason.

I don't particularly mind. Yeah, it's kind of a hassle keeping two logbooks, but I can see Purdue's need to have a logbook specifically for flight training that stays there at all times. I had enough flight experience going in to realize that I wanted to keep my own personal logbook as well, but I feel sorry for the people who start their training there and after completing training there have never kept their own personal logbook. I can't remember how much the logbook was off the top of my head, but it wasn't more than $15.

yeah, the reason i origionally asked was because a Purdue student wanted to use our planes over the summer to build some X-C time and he couldn't produce a logbook. he then told us about the situation with logs at Purdue, but managment here gets kind of sketchy if a renter doesn't produce a logbook.

Seems like your flight school (not you, management) is overreacting anyway... is there an insurance minimum of total time required to rent a plane? If not, he's got his cert and medical, yes? Isn't that all that matters? And he has to do a checkout, no?

It's nice to be safe, but it's nicer to have common sense sometimes.

Even if he was ramp checked he wouldn't need to produce a logbook, so why should he run the risk of losing it by taking it home with him?

yeah, the school is sort of the "corporate"-type school for the area. very detailed and by the book kind of place. but even so, it's weird to even me for someone not to have a personal logbook. its just such a part of your training and also of you as a pilot. its like a Cop with no gun, a clown without a red nose, or Pasey with no Dawson...it just ain't right.

and yes i agree it really is all kinds of silly, but it is important for a CFI to see a new students log in order to get an idea of their training. for instance:

-when was your last flight?

-have you had, or do you need a Flight Review?

-how much experience do you have in this specific make/model aircraft?

-what kind of X-C's have you had (did you just go to one place over and over, or have you experienced different types of airspace/obstacles to flight??)

Well if he's a member of the flight program, his last flight was probably at the beginning of the month or end of april... Chances are he doesn't need a flight review (but could need one, depends if he got his private here at Purdue or outside).

As for the experience, if he wants to rent a low wing, he's probably got 100 hours of low wing experience, high-wing, assuming he did all his training at Purdue, probably 1-2 hours

X-Cs at Purdue require you to go to different places, you can't go to the same place more than twice in one course, so chances are they've been around the area.

Hope this helps a bit
