Default BGR

I'll be heading out on Saturday for Boiler Gold Rush. I can't believe how fast the summer went! I'm really excited to get out to Lafayette and meet new people. Can anyone here tell me about their experience at BGR or just the beginning of college in general (what to bring, etc). Thanks in advance for any help. I would love to meet any JC'ers at Purdue this fall.

When I went it was call CORN - Campus Orientation for Resident Newcomers or something stupid like that. By far the corniest stupidest couple of days of my life - they filled our schedule with a bunch of touchy feeling kind of kindergarten games - but the good part was it did get you to campus and get some kind of introduction to it before classes started. I don't remember having to have any thing special - just some comfortable clothes. Don't worry about bringing every little thing you might need - Lafayette has plenty of stores you pick up what you forget.

I wish I could be out there with you.

BGR is just as Jason said, like a one-week camp for freshman. Some of the things are corny, but if you overlook that and go in with the attitude that it's a great way to meet people and discover the campus you'll get a lot out of it.

Have fun!

All in all BGR was a pretty fun time. In addition to learning about campus and Purdue, it was a good opportunity to get comfortable in the dorms and meet new people. Although they like to make you think everything is mandatory, don't be afraid to skip something if you don't feel like going since as its been mentioned some of the things are pretty pointless. Have fun and good luck!

I didn't go through BGR so I can't say anything about it, but remember AT has a freshman picnic on Sunday the 22nd and it gives you introduction to some of the activities at the airport and in AvTech (I'm assuming you are AvTech since you are on an aviation message board). Also watch signs for call outs for organizations in the first few weeks. Clubs are the best way to get to know new people.

Your experience at BGR all depends on your group. I was assigned to a pretty lame group with a leader who shouldn't have been leading.. As others said, its nice to be able to have a week to aclimate to campus life before classes start.

If you get bored, theres no problem just ditching your group and having some fun exploring campus and perhaps raising that alcohol tolerance (joke.. i'm not advocating underage drinking)

Oh yeah.. go to the AT picnic and join some clubs!

It a good chance to meet people and get oriented. If something's stupid or boring though, you don't have to go. Your not being graded and there's no attendance. I was amazed by the number of people who hated activities and kept going. I guess thats what 4 years of high school will do to ya. That being said, if you skip everything to play Vice City, then you're doing yourself a diservice. And that goes double for classes the week after.
