Default Phrase I've never heard before

I was on a XC from KVGT to KRAL and I heard a phrase I was unfamiliar with. I heard a controller call out an aircraft that wasn't responding and then said "avant guard". What would he mean by that?

Sorry quote from a good movie/great book. lol

Avant-garde is a french term, and generally used to describe innovative, possibly not mainline art of some form that might be questionable. If it were truly used in this environment, I don't really see what the humor in it, but maybe i'm missing something. lol

Perhaps it just sounded like that but they said something else?

Avant garde... you should have replied "cessna 123, uh, I don't get it."

Are you sure you didn't mis-hear the controller. He could have said "on guard" like he was trying to call the NORDO plane on the guard freq.

Perhaps he said "En Garde" and was attempting to start a fight

I always wondered what would happen if some pilot didn't understand/mean the implication of that, and said it actually trying to be nice. Would the controller still be mad?

Is there another implication other than trying to be nice?

He was more than likely saying "on guard." Controllers usually say Nxxxx on guard contact (facility) on (freq). I had to say this before and it usually works...if they are montoring 121.5.

Care to elaborate? I often say "see you next time" when handed off from a nearby tower because we do a lot of pattern work there and we know most of the controllers...can this be insulting somehow?

Wow, I would have never put THAT together. Do you really think a controller would think that's what you're saying to them, esp. if they know you frequent that airport?

The more direct, pointed way to use that phrase is "See You Next Tuesday."

That's just the accepted euphamism for that piece of profanity in American English.
