Well, that's bad phraseology from the book. I understand when you say you'll call my base, but if you just say "extend down", I would have to come back with "How far?" So your homemade deviation from the book standard is an improvement, IMHO.

Yeah, and that's why I normally choose to say both. Have to say the part from the book, and I choose to say the additional verbiage when I know it will improve comprehension.

Though if the extension is going to be brief, I have used only "extend downwind" without trouble. However if clarification were ever needed, it's no trouble to specify a bit.
