That's what the guys from hurricane hunter squadron at keesler AFB, ms do. I had a chance to check out one of their c-130's couple days ago. they fly into the hurricane and drop a sonde of some kind to get the information.

My personal fav is the Squall Line. Not too high like satellite pics, which lack something visceral; Great vantage point to appreciate the forces behind it.
The newbies can recall this image when looking at a squall line on wx charts--and think of what could be in & underneath it.
