Default Prop vs. Concrete post...

Not exactly sure where this happened, maybe someone can enlighten us so we can avoid this guy's general vicinity.

So here's the story that accompanied the photos.
Self service Avgas pump. Guy fueled his Cherokee, but had a dead battery. Pushed back, primed, left the throttle half open, mags on. Got out, gave the prop a swing, and sure enough it fired right up (at about 1800rpm), and the plane headed straight for the fuel farm.

Fortunately the prop hit one of the strategically placed concrete posts...

Concrete post won the battle, crankshaft sheared off the engine, sending the prop, hub, & spinner flying.....landing on the roof of a hangar 150 yds away....

And here it sits...

the aftermath....

I Don't think it's gonna buff out.

That prop on the roof of the hangar is hilarious.

Dumb question here.

He didn't have another pilot on the controls holding the brakes?

If you are going to do something stupid like that, it would probaly be a good idea to at least have the parking brake set.

Why exactly did he open the throttle half way? You don't need that much power during start. I've never handprop'ed or ever actually seen anyone hand prop start but I'm assuming you don't really need the throttle that high up.

I can only imagine what would have happened if the plane was pointed away toward an open area. Good luck catching up with it if it's at almost 2000 rpm.

A) I hope that prop gets to stay there
B) Was he trying to hand prop it, or was he just rotating the prop? I'm guessing he just thought "I'll just give it a few turns, then it'll start right up!"

Ahhhh, I love speed tape. Speed tape is the duct tape of the aviation world. 10 roles of it would have that plane flying in 15 min flat.
