Default X-ctry pictures to Catalina Island and Oceanside

Just went through my photos and found these from a few months ago. Thought I would share! First set of photos is from a flight from Corona to Catalina with my fiance, brother, and brother's fiance. The next set were from a cross country from Corona-Oceanside-San Bernardino-Corona.

Awesome pictures

Catalina is a cool place. I went there on a sailboat once.

Here are the shots from the Corona-Oceanside-San Bernardino-Corona x-ctry. My buddy flew the leg from Oceanside to San Bernardino. Hes a tailwheel only, aerobatics kind of pilot...so he loves slipping approaches such as the one into SBD. SBD is a fun airport to land at. Huge, 10,000ft runway, yet the airport is practically deserted. I always feel like Im landing at LAX whenever I go there.

Great pics!! Looks familiar! I'm hoping to do a Catalina trip sometime this month. Any suggestions on things to look out for or things to do there?

Hey that looks just like Flight Simulator! The mission where you have to go from Catalina to Long Beach, but your engine dies, and you're supposed to land on a carrier, and you'll fail if you successfully coast on into Torrance instead.

But I'm not bitter.

Looks like it was a pleasant flight.

Ive flown in there 4 times. Once as a student with my instructor, and 3 times by myself. Its always a great flight! The runway slopes upward, so anticipate that when you are flaring unless you want to hit it as hard as I did my first landing there as a student

As far as what to do, Ive unfortunately never left the airport each time Ive been there. Ive heard Avalon is nice if you can catch the bus there but Ive never had enough time with the rental plane to spend the whole day there. Nevertheless, it is still fun. I usually land, grab a delicious buffalo burger, and then hike the airport loop trail. I think its about 3 or 4 miles long. Its a nice little hike, especially if you are lucky enough to get as close as I did to the buffalos! After that I hop in the plane and head home!

I'm going to try and go back in 2 weeks, myself. One last trip before I move to Texas.

Have fun!

Sweet! Thanks for the heads-up on the sloping runway. I had a little taste of that the other day at Palomar.

By the way, good luck in Houston! I moved out here from there 3 years ago. Despite what some people might say, it's actually a pretty cool city. Although it's giant and spread out, there's a lot to do and the people there are some of the friendliest in the world. Sugarland can seem a little distant from anything, but it's not really that far from the hill country. Get over to Austin whenever you can - one of the coolest cities in the country! Also, from now through September, there are random festivals all over the place. Hit some of those up - usually some good tunes, cold beer and great food. Let me know if you have any questions about the area!

Oh! And do yourself a favor - study a map of the greater Houston area - get to know all the major highways and how/where they run. It'll save you a lot of time driving!!!

Nice shots.

Gotta love Corona. 90% of the pilots and operators there should be in prison.

Thanks for the photos.

I flew out of Norton and March during Desert Storm (C-21s). I remember a lot of those places.

I wish you success!
