Default Istanbul, Turkey

Some are going to have comments, others not. I can't remember all that I've seen.

Thoughts? Turkey is fantastic. People are very friendly and even though Ramadan is going on, people go absolutely above and beyond to make sure you're comfortable and well-fed.

Mixed grill, on the first night:

View from breakfast on the second day:

The Grand Bazaar:

Shopping for rugs with the captain:

"Jimmy", a Turkish shop owner, posing with his picture from his trip to New York posing with the "Naked Cowboy" in Time Square:

The "Spice Market". Smells like heaven:

The Blue Mosque:

Had to take our shoes off to enter the "Blue Mosque":

A formerly Byzantine Christian church built during umm, I can't remember whose era:

Lost! DOH!

More food!

Thumbs up Re: Istanbul, Turkey

That dinner looks good.

Are you near the Bosphurus Bridge? Apparently pedestrians can't walk across it anymore but I think that would be cool to see, connecting Europe and Asia.

Good pictures, thanks for posting them.

Pedestrians were all over it when we walked past. I have to find the picture of it so I can add my "That's Asia!" Photo!

Here's some YouTube:

You can hear the prayers during one of the prayer breaks as we walk towards the train:

Inside the "Blue Mosque":

I might have more if I'm able to get youtube to behave. Great service, but buggy and a pain in the ass.

I bought a load of Turkish saffron, a wee bit of Iranian saffron and some spice mix that's apparently killer for meatballs.

The last pic looks very tempting/exotic... do you know the name of that dish laid out on a bed of slivered carrots?

It was a good learning experience too. They're in the middle of Ramadan and I got a great opportunity to talk with a lot of people about customs and such. Do NOT typecast Muslims because the perception we get in the US from the cable news networks isn't necessarily what reality is.

I was just talking to Kristie via Skype about one of the shopkeepers talking about how he has to abstain from drinking water, eating, even physical contact with the opposite sex before sundown but, "I tell you friend, once sundown comes, there's this girl from Kazakstan that I'm meeting up with tonight for good times and lots of Efes!"

Efes is a popular brand of beer here in Turkey.

FMC aircraft don't involve navigating via roads and passageways from the Byzantine empire, bro!

Don't feel bad Doug...I got lost in Munich on Saturday....well it was after we left the fest and the S-Bahn was at a complete standstill due to the massive crowds at the Hauptbahnhof.

Did you and Kristie make it over to Stuttgart?

Turkey's neat. I agree, if you only knew of Muslims from the major news networks, you'd be in for a pleasant surprise if you met a non-extremist Muslim on their turf.

The Turks don't like the extremists either. In fact, the continue to have border skirmishes with the Iraqi Kurds and a number of soldiers were killed very recently. Massive story over here.

That's right! A lot of Muslims don't like extremists, just like many Americans don't care for extremists of any stripe here!.... I love the Mediterranean - Turkey, Greece, Italia, France, Spain:::sigh:::....oh, and the food!!!

Awesome pics Doug! Keep them coming. I love it when you and Kev do your little travel photo journals.
