Default Continental Micronesia Island Hopper HNL-GUM

I just got back from my trip to Australia. I needed to use my CO OnePass miles to get there. There was no availability on Qantas and I didn't have time to up my life insurance, so Korean Airlines wasn't an option. So I went to CO.com and I booked the HNL-CNS segment. During the search the "Island Hopper" came up as an option. My roommate (former CO dispatcher) threatened my life if I didn't take the flight. The flight originates in Honolulu and stops in Majuro, Kwajalein, Kosare, Phonpei, and Chukk before terminating in Guam.

Below are some pictures from the trip:

N26232, my ride for the day.

The terminal in Majuro. What no Starbucks?

Taxiing out of Kwajalein. The U.S. Military does Intercontinental Ballistic Missle testing here.

Yummy Turkey breast sandwich. Better than the infamous Continental Beef Sandwich.

Approaching Kosrae.

The "terminal." The f/a told me they sometimes skip Kosrae if there is water on the runway. Apparently they cut it close.

Nice EliteAccess sign and carpet in Kosrae. How about electricity in the bathroom?

Phonpei

Enroute to Chukk. We had a 20 minute ATC delay leaving Phonpei. ATC delay? We are the air traffic. No one else flies here.

Approaching Chukk.

Chukk International Airport.

We had a pressurization issue on the way to Chukk. So we sat on the ground for a bit while the MX guy (they carry one on board the entire time 18.5 hours flight) worked on the issue. I was hoping they would resolve it because this is the airport hotel:

I spent the night and most of the next day on Guam before my flight to Cairns left. Guam was a pretty interesting island. I would give some thought to flying for an airline out there as it the flying seems a lot more interesting.

I have flown the Island Hopper many times as an FO back when we flew the 727 out there. It was always a treat to take off not knowing what awaited you on your next stop. NDB approaches to island runways in bad weather were always humbling. On many of the islands some of the women don't wear tops. I remember my first time to Yap and being sent inside the terminal for something by the crew with them knowing I would get an eye full - Sure enough....

Such a beautiful part of the world. I would recommend for anyone with pass privileges, and who are up for an unforgettable adventure to head for Micronesia. You won't be sorry!

From what I could tell, the ticket usually runs about $1000 if you pay for it.

I didn't see any women without tops. But I did notice the fire department meeting our airplane and following it out at almost every island. Any idea why?

As far as non-reving, becareful. My roommate explained that it often gets weight restricted which is why he never flew the route himself.

It used to be that the fire trucks were so unreliable that they would rarely start. It became required that they escort the aircraft to insure that they were running. I remember years ago it was discovered on one of the smaller islands that the firetruck didn't even have a battery in it. Good point on the weight restrictions, but getting bumped in Kosrae or Chuuk could be quite an adventure in itself. As a diver, Chuuk (also known as Truk) is awesome. Diving Truk Lagoon is a big lesson in WW2 history with many sunken Japanese ships in remarkable condition. Maybe the women of the islands got tired of tourists looking at their boobs and covered up?

I booked two reward tickets.

1.) EWR-HNL-PHX
2.) HNL-CNS-HNL

It just by chance showed up on the HNL-CNS segment flight schedule.

Dang, if those pictures don't make a girl want to grab her dive gear and head to the South Pacific, I don't know what will. I can smell the trade winds by just looking at those photos. Awesome - thanks for sharing!

Those are some awsome pics...My dad, who moved out to Micronesia in the 60's first flew the island hop thousands of times since they were operating DC-6's. My mom was a flight attendant for Air Mic as well. This is where my passion for aviation comes from and I hope to fly for Air Mic when I get my ratings. It truly is great flying the island hop if you like air travel.
