Here are a few shots of Windshear conditions right over TUS a couple days ago my passenger snapped. We eventually landed around the back side of it. As you can tell - with quite a crosswind. Be careful of this stuff!

Didn't know you could see windshear...

| You cant. T-storms and excessive winds can indicate windshear but it can't been seen per se. If it could, it'd be forecasted rather than reported.

Yeah, yeah, of course you can't see Windshear . But ...if you're getting ready to land at a little uncontrolled airport without automated reporting systems and see something like the pics I posted - you'd do yourself a great service to hang tight until it blows over...

Its true you can't actually see windshear; but you can see its effects. For example.... Seeing a good amount of dust/sand getting blown across the ground in and arond T'storm clouds is a pretty solid indication of windshear. There are a couple of other examples that I read about during Commercial training but can't remember off the top of my head right now ![]() But yeah...CBs/Thunderstorms are not good as they typically bring along windshear in addition to other nasty things. Good rule of thumb is just to avoid them at all costs!

| Old Skool | That's why he said, "Here are a few shots of Windshear conditions right over TUS a couple days ago my passenger snapped." Translation: conditions that can create windshear ![]()

I think I can see my house in the first picture. I was at home when the isolated storm hit in Tucson and I must say dang it was windy and it hailed as well.

| It's pretty scary in real life. The CRJ has windshear alerting that provides a caution for a certain level of increasing performance and a warning (aural alert, flight director provides escape guidance) for seriously decreasing performance. Tucson is notorious for windshear, and the scary thing is that there's often dry microbursts that don't necessarily give you any warning--no real rain shaft, nothing showing on radar. We got into one one day right as it was developing, and it was like an elevator ride straight down. The thrust levers were firewalled and we still lost a couple hundred more feet. After we climbed out of it, we could see the developing dust ring on short final. I've heard of a CRJ of a certain airline that got into windshear so bad in TUS that the crew had to turn off the engine speed switches and pretty much fried the motors to get out.

| You can say that again. Especially when it is associated with convective activity.
