Over Brest, France. Listen for the "callyouback" (European for 'standby') towards the end. Kind of a time waster so don't expect a whole hell of a lot!

Now you know how I felt during my first 'crossing'. There's a certain rhythm to the communication in Europe. Have the "LEGS" page up, ask the other guy what to expect and you'll be fine. But that's pretty common in Europe. A mix of bad English + "other" on the radio. I usually crank up the radio in my headset to understand what's being said which is why I'm converting to noise-cancelling headset.

From what I know, the controllers over here say "callyouback", when they try to get you a further clearence. Like a climb to a higher altitude or if you request a direct routing. They usually have to coordinate with the surrounding sectors what they can get for you. "Standby" in France means only "shut up. I have to try to get some Air France planes in front of you, even if they are 60 miles behind". And Doug: that's a pretty clear transmission compared to other places... |

I know the feeling. A couple of years ago we flew to Antigua and that is how I felt on the radio. Take what that controller sounded like (because they speak french) and add a little jamaican accent to it and there ya go. I was so lost, if the capt had not flown down there a bunch of times before and helped me through it I would have cried probably.

Doug, That's a hell of a lot better than what you'd get from Piarco Control. Talking to them makes you want to do this-
