Default Istanbul, Turkey

Grand Bazar, Spice Market, the midnight express looking 1950's train to get to downtown, and one of many mosques in town.... interesting city... you can even buy an M16 on the street for $50.

I'm going to have to bid an IST trip to pick up some saffron because it's so darned expensive over here!

Ever wonder why the Captain Oveur in Airplane! asks about Turkish prisons? Wonder no more! The Midnight Express (one of Oliver Stone's first screenplays).

IST was a very cool layover... The sheer size of the Grand Bazar and the spice market was mind boggling. You could spend months there and not see it all. There are a few vendors there that are very Delta friendly. If you want to get your wife something nice, go see Jimmy the jewelery guy. When you go to the spice market, you need to try some of the fresh made Turkish Delight (I brought a pound home and it lasted less then 5 minutes). Captain bought a huge hamock for $5. Very good deals there.... Also for dinner, you need to go to the "train resturaunt" (out the hotel, turn right, 1 block turn left...go to the train station...resturaunt is right next to it... and order the "mixed grill". I have no idea what kind of meat was on the plate but dang it tasted good.

... oh and the best part of the trip... the hotel dry cleans your uniform for free, same day service. Give it to them after you get to your room and it's hanging in your closet when you get back to your room after diner!

Looking at those pics I was struck by the similarity to Cairo in many ways.

A little bit of camel, with a dash of street dog! Camel actually tastes pretty good. Has the same texture as rough beef cuts.

You can still haggle, but the starting point was much lower at the Delta friendly vendors..... standard 24 hour layover
