Default What to get MikeD....

The old thread "MikeD Donations" can be found here

Christmas in the desert page is here

here's a few new messages we got from Mike today...

[ QUOTE ]
Hey Kristie,

Thanks so much for the donations and support, that's very much appreciated to know that some back home still realize that we're out here. So many Americans only seem to realize what goes on in the 10 foot circle around them, or when the next episode of "Friends" is playing.

My unit here has 12 pilots. We could use all sorts of stuff. MRE meals are getting old, so things like microwave raviolis, spaghetti, etc would be good. Snacks and stuff as well as sundries would be good. Small pillows (I sleep with a folded field jacket for a pillow). Sundries and stuff (toothpaste, etc).

I'll come up with more things as I think of them. Again, thanks to you and Doug for your thoughts. Only 4 more months to go.

Mike

The area around here is rainy and muddy as hell right now. Was dusty as hell, but the rains made everything a mud pit. More stuff like snackies such as beef jerky, microwave meals (better than macaroni and cheese MREs everyday), maybe some of the latest Playboys . Yeah, the flak jacket pillow gets old, and the poncho for a blanket doesn't do much. But hey, when sleeping in a small tent or back of a Humvee, what does one expect?

The people around here seem alright, but it's the old Vietnam style of not knowing who is who and who is enemy, who is friend; so you're almost forced to treat everyone leery until you can know who's who. The average Iraqi is just like anyone else, they just want to live life, have a business, and take care of their family. Unfortunately, other Iraqis and foreigners don't want that, and they're the ones that are killing US soldiers as well as fellow Iraqis. It'll take some time to convince the people that they really are free, that Saddam and the Ba'athist Party members aren't coming back to power, and that the enemy element of terrorists will eventually get rooted out.

I don't really buy the reason we cam in here, the "imminent threat" of WMDs, but that needs to be dealt with in the political circles. Right now, we're here, and we've stripped the government from the land, and we're now responsible for cleaning up the mess in the kitchen, so to speak. If we cut and run now, all the deaths, both sides, will have been for not. A crappy situation I know, and I certainly don't care to be here, but while I'm here, I'll do the best I can to try and make at least a little bit of a difference...to somebody.

Thanks again, Kristie, for all that you and Doug are doing. It's appreciated more than you'll ever know.

Flew a mission last night. Crappy weather/night and down low well within SAM missile and gun range in order to escort a convoy through a hostile stretch of road. Real pain in the ass flight since it's tough being in the rain and under the clouds while trying to follow a road and keep a few vehicles in sight without flying into the ground from spatial disorientation. Ask Doug if he'd like to trade jobs with me.

Mike.

Great to get an update from him, I agree that it sucks he is there, but it sounds like he has a good attitude about it.

Keep him in your prayers.

Thanks for sharing Kristie!

I would really like to donate, but am a little embarrassed by the small amount it would be. Is that alright? Things are just a little tight right now!

Thanks again for sharing!

Good Luck Mike!

it doesn't matter how much you donate.. what matters is that you donate - in whatever way possible.. so that mikeD and his 12 person unit knows that people over here do "still" care and are concerned about their welfare..

what concerns me is that we're spending 87 BILLION dollars and our guys don't even have pillows or blankets to sleep on... what's up with that????? I just don't understand that at all.. they expect you to be alert - but how can you be alert if you can't get a good nights sleep?

even $2 will help buy a pillow!!

I'm going to need a lot of stuff so anything from a "Hey, get back safe" email to whatever you can afford would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

Support the troops? Put your email and your money where your mouth is.

I'm even hitting up Delta for supplies for these 12 guys living in that crap hole.

Two dimes and three pennies? Oh yeah, send it because it can go towards postage. .

Only have money for a free email? mail it to carepackage@jetcareers.com and I'll print and send it.

If you support your troops, lets make sure that these 12 guys know it.

That was so well said! I agree with him 100%!

I am amazed that we spend a billion a day on our military and our troops are in such conditions. Imagine how many other units are out here who don't have a Jetcareers group to help them out.

I got another message from MikeD today - he sounds more chipper than in his previous message!

but anyways - there was no word on what's going on from over there, just that he does have CD and DVD capability via laptop and would like a tv series set to watch... so i think we'll send him some CD 's and a series of the sex in the city or soprano's or something...interesting enough - they have the band of brothers set over there right now...

does anyone have suggestions for a CD to send? something rockin - and even something "american" but not sad?! I'll be finding some sort of xmas CD for them to play - anyone know where i can find a xmas cd with all the "funny" songs like - walking round in women's underwear and blue christmas by porky pig - that type of thing??

lemme know!! we're shopping this weekend and next week and will be sending them out late next week...

Thanks for the much support & donations - I'm looking forward to all the cards & emails that i've been told are "on their way"....

Kristie, I think you can download those tunes from twistedtunes.com and burn them to a CD. You know, you just gave me a hell of an idea.

Also, if he's got a DVD player, does he want the leftover DVD from my friend's bachelor party? It's been sitting around gathering dust and if it make our boys overseas feel any better......

The entire series of Battlestar Galactica is out on DVD now, fighter pilots would dig that. It's where the unofficial nickname "viper" for the F-16 came from, and "Cylon" is a common flight callsign.
