Default Hiking?

Whose up for hiking again this year?

Who wants to take care of setting it up, finding the location, gathering transportation/cooler etc??

I was planning to fly up but if you and Doug need me to help drive stuff up I should be able to help out. If I have my car up there I wouldn't mind providing transport and cooler storage in my trunk.

I am definatly up for a hike. I won't have a car in Vegas so I would hope I can bum a ride off of someone. (Course I will chip in for gas or whatever...)

Anyway, when were you going to do a hike last year? I think the best time would be one of the mornings hopefully before the last day of the events so that we could get back to the hotel to shower before hopping on the plane back home.

There are some awesome canyons around Vegas, (so I hear, I have never been.) If they are wet, that generally means the trials might be muddy and mushy. I hate that... I might be up for something that has a higher gain in elevation. It all depends how far people want to go. If we have a big group, 3 miles might be all we want to do... and might take 2 or more hours. I will help however I can so just let me know. I will bring my pack to carry some supplies such as a med kit, survival gear and Face Paint! It will be fun.

I'd be happy to put something together. And this time, I will get directions other than the ditzy woman at the car rental company who was too busy flirting with me to understand, no, I didn't say I want you to hike up your skirt, I said I want to go hiking.

Yeah, your directions sucked

If we wanted to go back to red rock, there are other trails we didn't go on. Of course I have no idea what trail we went on in the first place.

I'm game for a hike if I manage to get out there again this year.

We did the errr... ahhh... "Children's Discovery Area" at red rocks. It was fun, but it wasn't much more then a 5 minute walk. There looked to be some other trails out there that would be doable in a short amount of time. I liked doing it the morning of the main event. Even starting at noon, people still had plenty of time to get back and go to the career fair or just the main event.

And this time we won't need directions.

I'd get on the state park website and see if you can't get a trail map of some sort from them or from AAA or something....that way you all can map out what direction etc to take before you go.

I think the red rock canyon would be a decent place to hike. There are a ton of trails in that area. Ice Box canyon looks kind of cool, but there might be snakes. I hate snakes... I wish there was somewhere to hike that had a view of the city. I've looked around a little bit but I can't seem to find any decent trails that would take us to a nice view.

Yeah, I've heard that Red Rock Canyon is a good place to hike. I most definitely would be up for a hike if I go! I'm not a big fan of Vegas, but I'm always up for getting outside and hugging some trees...er, or rocks!

Okay, I have another idea... Go to this site: http://www.nps.gov/lame/planyourvisit/maps.htm and download the backcountry map of the Hoover Dam area. Locate the Hoover dam and follow the river south to the Arizona Hot Spring. The hike in to the springs is around 2 miles I believe so that would make the hike around 4 miles. The trailhead is just off of 93 so it makes for pretty easy access. If we planned to be at the trailhead by 8am we could be back in time for all the events, if they start at 12. Then again I don't know that people want to do a 4 mile hike...

Hehe, well I probably will like Vegas, but I'm not really old enough to do the usual Vegas activities. I'll be 19 and sitting at the kids table I guess.

oops...

While this would be an awesome hike, I figured out it would actually be around 6 miles long. That might be a little too much unless you are feeling pretty ambitious. The search continues...

A 6 mile hike is fine with me,as long as it's not blazing hot!

Yeah, you'll be drinking water because you're hungover!

Anyway, if you want to go somewhere to get a view of the city, here's a good place.

http://www.reviewjournal.com/recreat....html#location

The trail that's got the best view of the city is Griffith Peak.

http://www.birdandhike.com/Hike/Mt_C...Griffith_H.htm

Oh, look. Directions are right there! And there are even waypoints! Heh heh heh.

Here's more information on Mt. Charleston. And they've got picnic facilities so if we really want to do some grilling, we can do it.

I like that Griffith peak hike, but its an hour and a half from Downtown. Mt. Charleston sounds like a great area to hike, even the shorter Big Falls hike sounds fun. My only concern is getting back in time for the events...

I asked our convention bureau rep and she gave me these websites to look into if you want a GUIDED tour of some sort...

she said all 3 have had great responses with clients but if we want to go pink jeep tour, we need to book well in advance as they are pretty darn popular!!

As for the hiking/transportion/tours, I have provided some options below - please review the links - these are well-known, reputable companies that we utilize often!
http://www.bouldercityoutfitters.com/hiking.php
The Pink Jeep guys are SO popular!
Showtime Tours is another popular one in town - once you open this link, scroll down to Guided Trail Tours.

I'm not inclined to go with a guided tour. It jacks up the price and we can find our own way on a map.

If someone wants to go that route and organize one of those, it's all good by me, though.

I agree.. I think we'll be fine without a guide. As long as we can get to the trailhead we should be fine. I'd like to find a trail that goes in a loop... It's just more adventurous that way.

Everybody under the age of 21 should be going on this hike. It'll be good for ya!

I swear, you make one wrong turn and you never hear the end of it.

Sheesh, man. Just because you're used to flying an airplane that has a GPS system that tells you exactly what route to follow....
