Default Anyone have an in with LAS ATC?

I'd like to see if we can get a tour setup at the LAS ATC control tower...

you'd have to have a US passport and it would need to be during the week but with NJC happening from Thursday - Sat/Sun...that could work out well for us!

Thoughts?

Would you need a passport or would our pilots certificate be good enough? With people coming in throughout the day Thursday and people starting to leave Saturday, I'm thinking Friday may be the best day. If that day won't work then some may jjust have to miss out then. Great Idea though.

Passport is required. Otherwise, I would be touring a lot of ATC facility already

I would think there must be some other method, i.e. birth certificate, military i.d., etc....There are plenty of citizens that don't travel with the need for a passport.

Normally a US Birth Certificate with the raised seal & a US Issued Drivers License should work as well.

What Kristie is suggesting are those without a US Passport, get one.....

Everyone should get a passport. You never know when you'll need it.

And if you want to fly for an airline, it's darn near a requirement.

I know at DFW, they just wanted DLs and proof of US citizenship. A passport would do for both. Shouldn't be that hard to set up. All the ATC facilities I've talked to have been excited that people were actually interested in seeing what they do.

Every Tower is different, the Long Beach Tower required everybody to have a US Passport.

Kristie

I left a voicemail with the Las Vegas airport, PR person, hopefully she can assist with arranging a Tower Tour, or at least put me in touch with the right person.

My current CP worked ATC a few years back and two of his buddies now work ATC at LAS. I could ask him to ask a few questions of his friends and see what they know.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but I've gotten into 2 towers and 1 TRACON. I won't say the names of the airports, but I took a student to one tower and got in simply by pressing the buzz box and telling a controller who I was and why I was there. Following a quick scanning with their remote camera, I was in. The other was simply a phone call, which consisted of the guy telling me the parking lot gate access code and also mentioning that the security gate around the tower as well as the main entrance door to the facility was left open because he had an umbrella with him when it was pouring down rain and didn't want to put it down to close the gate.

The TRACON was a different story. When we pulled up, the guards did a complete search of my car and asked for my and my passenger's ID. They took it into their shack, after which I presume they did a background check (my passenger was a black guy from Jamaica...we were writing a report for our ATC class on the new STARS System, which this facility was equipped with).

I was kinda shocked about how easy it was to get into the 2 towers.

So what about us whom are legal permanent residents (green card), we wouldn't be able to take the tour?

(thinking about going to NJC 2006 now that I live in SoCal, and I can pretty much drive there )

Kristie. I simply called the KPHX admin. office they hooked me up with the guy who does the tours of the airport, Who in turn told me that the FAA handles all tower/TRACON tours and gave me the number to the FAA reps I needed to speak to.

Then we settled that I was a pilot and an american citizen he told me that tours are Mon-Thurs and told me what to bring and we scheduled a date and presto. It was that easy. Thanks again Pengy for the advice.

Anyone and everyone going is going to have to be a pilot. Spouses of pilots may be accepted not sure like has been said every facility is different. I was informed that post 9/11 they no longer give tower/TRACON tours to "normal civilians".

Pengy and SeanD have said that they PM'd you contact numbers so it will be exciting to see if we can get a tour established.

One question...what process does one need to get a passport? Nope I don't have one. But I know that they do them at FedEx Kinko's. Or at least they take your picture there!

Maxie

I made contact with the Vegas Tower, I was instructed to confirm as we get closer....

As for a passport, it is a good idea to have a US Passport...

USPS, you should always call ahead to make sure, but usually they can give you the form, you can fill it in there, take a declaration/oath, attach your pic and send it in. Pretty easy and no surcharges, just the regular costs. They do pretty much everything, even take your photo (but don't get your photo there, I went to one, they took an old camera, said "focusing" and she walked forward and backwards until this huge black box got a clearish image of me. Then out came the pic, mine came out recognizable, but my brothers came out looking exactly like a mug shot for a sex offender.
