Default Networking: Good Strategies for Doing it Effectively

I am starting my freshman year in college at Central Washington U enrolling in the flight technology program already holding A PPL. CWU has a nice relaxed program and I look forward to meeting some new peeps involved in the program, taking some classes, and getting my ratings hopefully instructing by the end of my 2nd year and getting the hours needed to try and get a job with Horizon coming out of college in which the mins are reduced if you complete the CWU program(750 TT and 50 ME). I also understand things could change from now and I will keep my options open. I have a backup plan and am planning on minoring or double majoring in something else, after looking at the course catalog, a double major doesn't look as daunting a task here at CWU as I originally thought.
Enough background, I'll get to my point hopefully some of you haven't fallen asleep yet. My question is, what are honest, effective, and sincere ways to network without seeming like you are trying to be selfish, too forthcoming, or insincere in your approach? If anyone is unclear about my question I'd be more than happy to elaborate, if not fire away, regards, Chris
