| Old Skool | As the title states, if you're in Asheville, NC, I have a few questions for you. Mostly about the airport and the economics, cost of living, etc. |

I don't really know much, but pending anybody else stepping up, what do you want to know and maybe I can help. Airport sits in the middle of a valley, mountains (hills to you West coast people) either side. Flat to the south which generally seems to be where the practice area is if you're instructing. Approaches can be slam dunk coming from East of West, over the hills, airport in sight, get down anyway you can, but IMC you just get vectored in south or north and the approaches run up and down the valley. Laid back controllers, let me circle in a Caravan over the Biltmore house on a sightseeing charter and just pointed out traffic departing to me. Just one FBO there last time I checked. Always enjoyed working with them on hotels, fuel etc. Independant flight school upstairs based at a number of local airports. Had new C172s and a Seminole (I think) last time I was there. Asheville prices have gone up since it's become a big new place to retire but it still has it's artsy district with people living on the cheap, so I imagine you can find a way to live cheaply there, just as you can find a way to spend a lot of money. Airport is south of the city, if you have a car (and I suspect you'll HAVE to have a car) I've got to believe you can find cheap living by going further south into the little towns of NC. Hope that helps. | |
