| So I was in Beaufort this past weekend. My wife and I are at a bar downtown near our hotel. We were having a good time and had way too much to drink already. All of a sudden in walk Staff Seargent Sluaghter (don't know his real name). He is a Drill Instructor at Paris Island. He and I talk for a bit, he makes the required swabbie jabs. I countered with the requisite jar head remarks. We were having fun when another of his buddies came in. All of us are talking and the Staff Seargent yells to me, "Lets do a shot" Me, never one to pass up a free drink agreed. He yells for the bartender to pass him some "Pepe's" I am thinking, "WTF is a pepe???" He hands one to me and it is a mini bottle of ....... Peppermint Schnapps" I look at him and say "Are you kidding me?" He replies, and I am not making this up..."You're drinkin with the big boys now..." I drink this breathmint and decide it is time to school the young leatherneck. I yelled over to his table "Lets do another one" He agrees so I go get a bunch of Cuervo. I have never seen a funnier sight than this huge (and I mean buff) marine gagging down this cuervo. I look at his friends and he actually spits it up. WTF? My wife drinks Cuervo. Marines, don't you guys teach this stuff? He could kill me with his thumb if he wanted but dang he drinks like a 10 year old girl. My opinion of marines sunk to a new low that night... |

| The military in general and the Marine Corps in particular is a microcosim of society. You'll find everything from teetoling Baptists to full blown alcaholics, and everything in between. I was to busy trying to save up for my motorcycle and renting airplanes to go out partying all the time. On the other hand I knew a bunch of guys that did nothing but drink. It's said that after a year in Okie you'll either be a weightlifting freak, an alcaholic, or find religion. Also don't let size fool ya. I've seen guys that wiegh 200lbs and are ripped, who had little to no tolerance for pain, and were useless in a fight. Most of these guys are so intimidating that they haven't been in a real fight in years, if ever. The handfull of force Recon guys I met were completly average in size. I worked with a guy for a year and a half and always thought he was your average air wing Marine. Then one day I saw him in his dress uniform, it was covered with ribons, jump wings, and his scuba bubble. In shock I asked him where he got all of it. "Oh yeah, I was in Recon for four years. Then I decided I wanted to do something different." Ya can never tell by looking |

| As a Marine that has served honorably in both the infantry as well as the air wing, I can say that the Drill Instructor that you met is a wussy.... .You'll find the wussies everywhere - in Force Recon, in the wing, in the cockpits and in the guard shacks. They'll blame their inability to outdrink the sailors and Army dogs on "religion", but really, they're just wussies!!! As I slowly get older, I can't drink the same amount that I used to (well, I can but it takes longer to recover... ) but I still manage to stay in practice every now and then. ![]() So, if any of you JC'ers (bring it on, Shooter... ) wanna go on some "Liberty PT", make sure you've had your rest and you're well prepared - This Sergeant won't be outdone by no Sailor!!!! ![]() Disclaimer : All in good humor....but oh, so true!!! ![]() |

| Sounds like a lot of fun Sarge!!! Maybe some day we can hook up and pretend we are on a liberty call and not grown men. HAHA You are definately right about recovery time getting longer and longer. I remember only a few years ago, I could tie one on and be up and going at 6 the next morning. Now I can be up and going at like 6 the next night. |

Guess I'll never make General. |

| I hear you about golf Mike. I call it weed hockey. I figure, it cost the same no matter how many times you hit the ball. Might as well get your money's worth. The first time, I went golfing as a chief i was with these 3 other "old" guys. I overheard them talking about the cart in front of is with the really nice looking driver. We caught up and it was an old dude driving. I asked if it was a submarine thing or something and then I learned that they were talking about a golf club. Who knew. I just figured everyone in the AF likes golf becasue all the navy golfers I know talk about how nice the courses are. |

| Moderator | [ QUOTE ] Amber, welcome to the mil forum! [/ QUOTE ] Thanks, I've 'lurked' here & read posts, but never contributed because I never really had anything worthwhile to add. I'm not a military 'brat', my dad left the service in early 1975, right before I was born. So all I know about the military is the stories he's told me about Holoman, Camp Douglas & Ubon (where he was stationed in Thailand during Vietnam). But they're damn good stories! |

| Old Skool | Add another squid to the drinking challenge...just let me know when and where. And golfing is the only place where they encourage drinking and driving. Get a good cigar, load up the cart with adult beverages and have a great day. ![]() txpilot |

| Mmmm, slammin some cold ones on liberty! I'm in! I miss that a lot. I could sure use a good liberty port about now. Speaking of Marines and drinking. I remember my first gator cruise we pulled into Corfu Greece for several days. It was a really greap liberty port. We almost got our liberty revoked because some grunts got drunk and broke into some families house looking for some girl they met at a club. As any respectable homeowner and father would do, he shot one of them. Oh man the ship's captain was pissed, the MEU commander was pissed as well as the amphibous group commodore. The word that liberty might be cancelled spread like wildfire. A lot of pissed off inebriated liberty goers. Luckily the bureaucrats at the embassy as well as the 6th fleet admiral were able to sooth the minds of the Greek and local government. |

I remember going off to red flag at Nellis for 2 weeks of drinking and flying on the AF, I would get completely wasted, and be fine the next day(well after a few mountain dews during the step brief.) . Now hell I cant even imagine doing that for 2 days straight, let alone 2 weeks straight. Of course I remember telling myself the next morning,"im coming home and going to bed" but that sure as hell didn't happen. Home ,a nd off to the bar, gotta spend that per diem |
