Veteran's Tuition Waivers

A two part post - one, an announcement for those who don't know, the State of Connecticut offers a complete tuition waiver for veterans who served in combat. I just discovered this, and you better believe I'm jumping on this one. Kris gets a little uppity about her Masters sometimes so I think it's time to even the score.

Veterans' Tuition Waiver: [CGS § 10a-105, CGS § 27-103, P.A 05-03 Sec.18 (3)]

To qualify for the waiver, the veteran must have at least 90 days of active-duty service during time of war, and if National Guard or Reserves units; must have been called up to active duty under Title 10 USC at least for 90 days, or unless the veteran was separated from service earlier because of a service-connected disability or the military operation lasted less than 90 days and he served for the duration.
How do I qualify?

• Student must be enrolled to a Degree Program (Undergraduate or Graduate Level)
• Discharged under Honorable conditions from the U.S. Armed Forces.
• Have a domicile in the State of Connecticut at the time of admission.
• Must be a matriculated student.
• Must have served in Time of War at least for 90 Days.

Under current law, eligibility is based on service in or during specified wars, conflicts, or operations, and in some cases, the veteran must have served in a combat or in combat-support role.

Next, a question - I've tried to search for other states who offer the same waiver with little luck. Found a few who are trying to get it. Plenty out there who offer tuition for current NG or Reserves. Anyone know of a complete list of states offering free tuition to war vets?

Masschusetts has it as well and there is a bill in the Senate as we speak that will extend tuition and fee waivers to all vets!!!! Tuition is the easy part to pay but the fees are what is killing me.

I found out about CT from the UCONN website.

Google was of little help.

I'd suggest just searching for it on the school website you are interested in.

I know TX has the Hazelwood Act which covers education costs for vets and my home state of Illinois has a similar program. But both require vets to be residents when they enlist/are commissioned and return to the state after military to receive education. I haven't heard of anything like CT where as long as the vet has domicile at time of application they can receive bennies. That is a major bonus for those from CT, and may spawn some shifty moves upon retirement/separation from active duty.

Google Hazelwood Act and TX and Illinois Veterans Education Act for the specifics on those states.

You could try the E-Z method of googling [your state] Veteran's tuition reimbursement.

Some states look like they offer it to the families of soldiers who died in combat (& then there's no mention, in that state, of it being offered to vets, themselves).

Washington State has a veterans tuition waiver as well.

The Illinois veterans grant s only (to the best of my knowledge) for those who went to MEPS in Illinois and then went back to Illinois after their enlistment.

Also, my husband was going to use the Hazlewood act, but you can not use the GI Bill while you use the Hazlewood Act. Where as in Illinois you can use both the Illinois Veterans Grant and the GI Bill at the same time.

Thats is awesome that Connecticut is doing that! I think all states should waive fees for vets fresh from combat.
