Default US Army Reserve Unit

Do anyone knows of any Army Reserve Apache unit on the east coast?

I believe Fort Knox in Kentucky (south of Louisville) flies the AH-64 as the Flying Tigers.

8/229th Aviation Regiment
"The Flying Tigers"(USAR) Fort Knox, Kentucky (AH-64)

(I wouldn't bet a paycheck on the accuracy though.)

Why would anyone want to fly a "ramp weight"?

But FWIW, the TN ARNG has a few in Knoxville, plus a Kiowa Troop as well.

Ramp Weight?!?

Those 1200 hours I had last deployment must've been a dream. You may not fly much during peace time but when there's people that need killin' out there you'll be flying more than you can stand.

The ramp weight comment refers to the numerous broken -64D's I've seen both in garrison and deployed. I'm glad that you received 1200 hrs, but your unit must be the exception, not the rule. The usual "crank four, to launch one" comes to mind. Then go out on an "escort mission".

When it comes to "killin'", it's the Kiowa's who have time and time again made their mark, not the Blunt Nosed Money Goblin. I can't comment further due to OPSEC, but my current deployment is just like the previous ones.

Now, when it comes to going after MBT's, I would prefer -64's every time unless A-10's are available.

With all that said, I'm glad to see other Army Pilots around here.

Good grief. Are you guys really doing a 58 vs. 64 pissing match?

90% of the pilots on this forum wouldn't fly into anything more dangerous than Detroit and you're arguing which of you two is the most steely-eyed killer? You both are warriors serving your country - you're brothers.

That being said, I flew Chinooks. If you need to, just gang up on me and call it good.

Besides, I've had help from both your airframes and couldn't appreciate you gun-bunnies more.

I know, but it's fun. Plus, we always win the argument.

Had a bunch of 58s left in our hangar overnight due to a storm.

A bunch of bored chinook guys with some chalk and some 58s to write on makes for some fun times! My favorite was this written on the engine cowling:

INSERT HAMSTERS HERE

I wouldn't expect anything less.

Now, back on topic. I found this and I hope it helps:

Pissing match? Hardly...we all know the KW doesn't have the power margins for allowing its pilots to take off with full bladders.

Just so everyone knows a full 50% of a Kiowa pilot's brain is dedicated to coming up with ways on how the Kiowa is better than Apache. They also have an established network to tell all their other scout buddies about what they came up with and how great they and the old relics they fly are.

Even if that 4 to 1 ratio were even close to being true, I'd take one Apache over four KW's anyday.

................................

Chinooks, they're cool. Someone's gotta get me to BIAP for leave. Just never understood why every Chinook patch has a characterization of a CH-47 with guns-a-blazin'.

Like my avatar? Because it's funny! If you guys had a sense of humor your patches would be of Apaches sling-loading things.

Get you to BIAP for leave huh? More like bring you your engines, transmissions, and rotor blades when you get yourself into trouble. More like sling you out when you get into TOO much trouble. More like bring you your ammo which enables you to do your mission. But yeah, having the privilege of flying soldiers to get the heck out of there is a pretty good mission too.

And do we really want to talk power margins...

I've seen some KW drivers do some damn impressive and heroic things with their under-powered relics.
